Job summary

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust seeks a Chief Cardiac Physiologist (Highly Specialised Echocardiography) to lead the echocardiography service at the Cardiac Centre (Broomfield). You will report complex cases, supervise junior staff, and drive education and competency assessment aligned with BSE accreditation.

You will provide expert clinical leadership, mentor team members and contribute to workforce development while advancing a high-quality, patient-centred service.

Qualifications

• BSc in Healthcare Science or equivalent qualification.
• RCCP registration and BSE accreditation.
• BSE assessor status or equivalent qualification.
• Extensive Cardiac Physiologist experience with echocardiography.
• Band 6 level experience for at least three years in echocardiography.
• Experience training staff in echocardiography and leading teams.
• Ability to perform cardiology tests unsupervised.

Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Chief Cardiac Physiologist (Highly Specialised Echocardiography) to join the Cardiac Centre (Broomfield) within Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

As a senior member of the team, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary service supporting the Senior Chief and Principal Cardiac Physiologists to ensure the delivery of a high-quality, patient-centred echocardiography service. You will provide expert clinical leadership in echocardiography, undertaking a wide range of advanced investigations including transthoracic and stress echocardiography, with responsibility for independent reporting and interpretation of complex studies. The role combines advanced clinical practice with leadership and service development. You will play a central role in the day-to-day supervision of the team, supporting junior physiologists, cardiographers, and trainees. You will contribute to workforce development by leading on education, training, and competency assessment—ensuring staff are supported to achieve and maintain high professional standards, in line with BSE accreditation requirements.

Main duties of the job

Your role will be to work as part of a multidisciplinary team assisting the Senior Chief and Principal Cardiac Physiologists to ensure the provision of high quality cardiac services and assisting with the day to day supervision of staff and be a specialist in Echocardiography.

You will take responsibility for junior staff in the absence of senior staff, the medical staff training in Echocardiography, provide managerial support to the Principal Cardiac Physiologist and provides clinical expertise in a broad range of investigations/procedures.

You will take an active role in the education, training and development of all junior staff, working closely with the training lead and ensure training continues in absence of the training lead.

Qualifications

Essential

• BSc in Healthcare Science or equivalent
• RCCP registration
• BSE Accreditation
• BSE assessor
• Significant experience as a Cardiac Physiologist in all areas of Cardiac Physiology, with further experience as specialist echocardiographer
• Experience within a band 6 position for at least three years
• Experience of training staff in echocardiography.
• Able to perform Cardiology tests unsupervised
