Chief Officer - Legal and Governance

£67,243 - £78,011 (including Statutory Role Allowance of £5,978)

Full time – 37 hours a week

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Chief Officer - Legal and Governance who will be part of the Council's ambitious and supportive Leadership Team.

You will be responsible for upholding high standards of corporate governance, ensuring compliance and leading the critical service areas of Legal Services, Democratic Services, Elections, Business Support, and Equality and Diversity.

You will do this by providing expert legal guidance, overseeing democratic processes and championing equality and diversity across all service areas. You will embed a governance operating model, ensuring the Leadership Team maintains full oversight of all governance responsibilities.

As the Monitoring Officer you will advise on the application of the Council’s Code of Conduct for elected Members and for officers, monitoring compliance with the Code and subsequent training of elected members.

About you

You will need to be a fully qualified legal professional with a practising certificate (Solicitor or Barrister) and have extensive experience in legal and governance functions, preferably within the Public Sector.

You will have a proven track record of leading and transforming complex services, ensuring compliance and delivering high-quality outcomes. Your expertise in corporate governance and legal services will enable you to provide expert advice to the Council, elected Members, and Senior Management.

As a dynamic leader you will have exceptional people management skills, commercial acumen, and the ability to drive service improvements. Your communication and influencing skills will be key to building strong professional relationships across the Council and with external partners.
