Job description

Chief Nursing Officer, Barts Health NHS Trust

Chief Nursing Officer,

Barts Health NHS Trust

United Kingdom

Barts Health operates from four major hospital sites (The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s, Whipps Cross and Newham) and a number of community locations, including Mile End hospital. Around 2.5 million people living in east London look to their services to provide them with the healthcare they need.

The Royal London in Whitechapel is a major teaching hospital providing local and specialist services in state-of-the-art facilities. Whipps Cross in Leytonstone is a large general hospital with a range of local services. Newham in Plaistow is a busy district hospital with innovative facilities such as its orthopaedic centre. Mile End hospital is a shared facility in Mile End for a range of inpatient, rehabilitation, mental health and community services. And St Bartholomew’s in the City, London’s oldest hospital, is a regional and national centre of excellence for cardiac and cancer care.

As well as district general hospital facilities for three London boroughs, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Newham, they have the largest cardiovascular centre in the UK, the second largest cancer centre in London, an internationally-renowned trauma team, and the home of the London Air Ambulance. The Royal London also houses one of the largest children’s hospitals in the UK, a major dental hospital, and leading stroke and renal units.

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for considering the role of Group Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at Barts Health NHS Trust. I am delighted you are exploring the possibility of joining our team at such an exciting and transformative time.

Barts Health NHS Trust is one of the largest healthcare providers in Europe, employing over 21,000 people and delivering care to more than 2.5 million residents of London and beyond. Our hospitals, The Royal London, Newham, St Bartholomew’s, and Whipps Cross, offer a wide range of clinical services, and together with our local partners, we work tirelessly to reduce health inequalities and provide equitable access to quality healthcare for all.

As a pivotal member of our Group Executive leadership team and a voting member of the Trust Board, the CNO will play an integral role in shaping the future of nursing, midwifery, and allied health professions across the Trust. In this role, you will provide professional leadership, drive our quality governance agenda, and ensure that our patients receive safe, compassionate, and person-centred care. Your leadership will also extend to patient engagement, safeguarding, and infection prevention and control, reinforcing our commitment to delivering the highest standards of care.

Working closely with the Group Chief Medical Officer, you will champion a multidisciplinary approach to clinical care, embedding a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. Your ability to foster collaboration and inspire excellence will be instrumental in advancing our clinical transformation priorities, achieving our quality objectives, and supporting the development of our workforce.

We are seeking an exceptional and compassionate leader with substantial experience at nursing leadership level and a strong track record of success in a complex healthcare environment. You will have significant expertise in quality governance and clinical leadership, with a track record of transformational change and improving outcomes for patients. Your inclusive and visionary leadership style will empower teams, nurture talent, and foster a culture where everyone feels valued and inspired to deliver their best.

We are actively seeking candidates from a range of backgrounds who offer the leadership skills required to succeed in a role of this complexity. If your values and ambition match ours and the opportunity to shape the future of healthcare for millions of people in one of the most diverse and dynamic regions in the UK attracts you, then I look forward to meeting you through the process and receiving your application.
