Job description

The Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group (NWUHG) is seeking an outstanding clinical leader to become our Group Chief Medical Officer. This is a rare opportunity to help lead one of the most ambitious transformation programmes in the NHS, across a complex and diverse region, and to shape the future of medical leadership at scale.

Bringing together three Foundation Trusts, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals (NNUH), Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn (QEH), and James Paget University Hospitals (JPUH), our Group will formally launch its integrated operating model in October 2025. With a combined turnover of £1.8bn, over 21,000 staff and volunteers, and a catchment covering coastal, rural and urban populations, the reach and potential of our Group is unmatched.

As Group Chief Medical Officer, you will be the senior executive responsible for medical leadership across the Group. You will lead on clinical effectiveness, outcomes, safety and governance, co-owning the quality agenda with the Group Chief Nurse and ensuring patients experience the same high standards of care across all our hospitals. You will also be the Group’s professional lead for our medical, dental, and pharmacy workforce.

Alongside delivering excellence in clinical governance and patient safety, you will help shape and drive our clinical strategy, enabling transformation that reduces unwarranted variation, supports prevention and integration, and improves care across the pathway. You will promote medical engagement, champion innovation, and act as a visible advocate for continuous learning and improvement. You will also lead on research and education, working with academic partners to strengthen our role as a university hospitals group and develop our medical workforce for the future.

We are looking for a strategic, compassionate, and highly credible leader with a strong track record of impact in complex healthcare systems. You will bring a deep commitment to equity, a focus on data driven decision making, and the ability to lead clinicians through both challenge and change. You will be comfortable working across organisational and system boundaries, and able to build strong partnerships with peers, regulators, and local communities.

If the opportunity to lead the future of acute and specialist care for the people of Norfolk and Waveney, and to lead clinical excellence across a once in a generation Group transformation, we would be delighted to hear from you.
