An exciting organisation in the energy sector is seeking to hire their first dedicated in-house lawyer as Chief Legal Officer (CLO) to join its leadership team. The organisation is dedicated to delivering key infrastructure for the UK, driving innovative solutions for a sustainable energy future, connecting markets, and enabling the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Job Description

The Chief Legal Officer (CLO) oversees legal matters, ensures compliance, and provides strategic legal advice to senior leadership. Responsibilities include managing external legal advisers, handling corporate governance, supporting major infrastructure projects, and mitigating legal risks.

Legal Strategy & Leadership
  • Develop and implement legal strategies aligned with business goals.
  • Provide legal advice to senior leadership and guide governance improvements.
  • Manage external law firms and legal budgets.
Compliance & Risk Management
  • Ensure regulatory compliance across jurisdictions.
  • Identify and mitigate legal risks.
  • Oversee corporate policies and procedures, including whistleblowing and complaints.
Contract Management
  • Oversee major infrastructure contract negotiations and management.
  • Ensure compliance with national security and regulatory requirements.
  • Support land, planning, and consent matters.
Corporate Finance & Governance
  • Support board meetings, corporate governance, and financial legal matters.
  • Implement governance strategies aligned with shareholder agreements.
  • Manage powers of attorney and legal aspects of financial transactions.
Operational Support
  • Provide legal guidance on IT contracts, regulatory issues, and operational agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with transmission system regulations.

The Successful Applicant

The ideal candidate will be a senior legal professional eager to take on greater responsibility in their first strategic leadership role, with support to grow in the coming years. Candidates should demonstrate:

  • Strong knowledge of corporate, contract, and regulatory law, preferably in the energy sector.
  • Experience with large infrastructure contracts, including EPC agreements.
  • Understanding of UK and German energy regulations and governance.
  • Expertise in corporate finance, shareholder agreements, and board management.
  • Ability to assess risks, manage claims, and work with external legal advisers.
  • Experience handling multi-jurisdictional legal matters across regions.
