Job description

We are Rolls-Royce SMR and we’re doing something that’s never been done before. We’re revolutionising an industry. That’s a once-in-a-career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy.

We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Chief Design Engineer - Installations to be involved in an industry-leading, cutting-edge design project for a new type of power station.

Reporting to the Chief Integration Engineer, the Chief Design Engineer – Installations is accountable for leading the development of the physical RR SMR power station reactor island installations layout design, as well as the containment vessel engineering design, mechanical handling, and development of modular Mechanical Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) solutions.

This role will be responsible for ensuring the installation aspects of the power station design are matured consistently with all design factors understood and managed. The role will require extensive interfacing and team working around the entire reactor island design programme, internally and externally, developing the installations of all systems, structures, and components of the RR SMR with a clear focus on all power station level key attributes.

The role is accountable for leadership of the following key areas:

  1. Installation layout across the reactor island, including the containment design, mechanical handling, and modular kit of parts solutions.
  2. All design and interface activities including substantiation of the nuclear safety case.
  3. Leadership of the operational manufacturing and installation phase strategic development, planning, and delivery.

The candidate will be an engineering leader with a strong record of delivery of large complex programmes with extensive supply chain engagement and design integration challenges. The candidate will demonstrate strong power station (or equivalent) knowledge and have extensive experience of leading MEP design programmes, with experience of MEP layout design and of multi-disciplinary design integration.

  1. Develop and lead the installations team to ensure a fully integrated complete reactor island design is developed.
  2. Provide senior leadership to deliver all aspects of the development programme covering reactor island systems, structures, and components, the MEP modularisation solution, and embodiment across the power station and all aspects of installations design and substantiation.
  3. Provide leadership across the business in all aspects of MEP installations and layout, supporting engagement with customers and stakeholders as needed.
  4. Input to the physical adaptation and variant requirements management for SMR applications across projects, covering different global regions and sites.
  5. Provide input and support to the operations and delivery organisation of the business, providing key governance and assurance across the installations design domain.
  6. Assist the Chief Integration engineer in managing the measurement and monitoring of compliance with the power station top-level attributes and objectives, with specific focus on the reactor island layout characteristics, manufacturing and construction/installation metrics, and cost.
  7. Provide wider support to engagement with Business Development and prospective customers as needed in support of the engineering function.
  8. Provide support and integrate engineering output into the supply chain and wider operations business as needed.
  9. Implement the programme Health, Safety, and Environment policy on all designated activities.

Confidence can sometimes hold us back from applying for a job. But we'll let you in on a secret: there's no such thing as a 'perfect' candidate. If you feel you meet 75% of the requirements for this role, we would love to hear from you.
