Job summary

Buckinghamshire NHS Trust are keen to recruit an enthusiastic cardiac physiologist with a desire for progression and a passion for cardiology.

We are looking for a cardiac physiologist with a high level of experience and knowledge either within cardiac devices or cardiac cath labs.

A BSc Cardiac Physiology qualification or equivalent is essential. A suitable qualification in cardiac devices (BHRS, EHRA or IBHRE) is essential (unless currently only working in cath labs).

Members of the cardiac physiology team will be expected to rotate around areas of cardiology such as the catheter labs (angiograms, PCI, PPCI, IVUS, OCT, FFR), exercise tolerance testing, tilt tests, tape analysis, device follow up, remote monitoring follow up and device implant to keep up existing skills so experience in those areas would be an advantage.

Please Note: Candidates must have UK registration.

Main duties of the job

Perform interrogation and analysis of pacemaker/devices leads during implantation, and interrogation, analysis and reprogramming of the pacemaker/ICD/CRT once implanted at regular follow up clinics to a high standard in accordance with BHRS guidelines and department minimum standards, with sufficient experience and knowledge to deviate from policy as required to obtain clinically relevant information.

Responsible for the interpretation of complex clinical information and applying theory to deliver a comprehensive assessment and analysis of pacemaker/ICD/CRT systems, including the interpretation and reporting of information you personally acquire.

Produce an accurate and comprehensive report for each investigation, with responsibility for your own caseload and ensure that it is accurately uploaded onto the cardiology reporting systems.

Assist with Cardiac Angiography/PCI including interpretation, reporting, checking adequate stock levels of consumables, record keeping and patient care.

To provide cross cover to other areas of the technical service, as the needs of the service dictate including practitioner level competency in a minimum of one other specialty. e.g. Non-Invasive Cardiology including ETTs and ambulatory monitoring.

To supervise the day-to-day work of junior staff within the department ensuring that any issues or problems, such as absence, conduct or capability are reported to the Principal Cardiac Physiologist.

Person Specification

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING Essential

  • Relevant BSc or equivalent level of knowledge
  • Professional membership of a relevant professional body obtained by examination e.g. BHRS, EHRA, IBHRE
  • Intermediate Life support Certificate

EXPERIENCE Essential

  • Practical experience in technical cardiology for a minimum of 4 years with at least 1 year at a specialist level of independent practice including investigation, interpretation, reporting, altering therapy and recommending alternative investigations.
  • To be able to identify when emergency medical intervention is required and take appropriate action.

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE Essential

  • Broad knowledge of technical cardiology, including practice with a wide array of complex technical equipment.
  • Highly specialist knowledge of medical devices, investigation, diagnosis and interpretation in all aspects of specialist field of devices.
  • Able to prioritise and manage own work and those of junior members of the team.
  • In depth understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and local guidelines, eg, Health and Safety daily contact with body fluids and blood, COSHH, British Cardiac Society guidelines.
  • Able to use specialised computer software and other programs such as Excel, Word etc and be able to set up documents and spreadsheet and extract information.
  • Use of fine tools using a high degree of manual dexterity, coordination and sensory skills for patient investigation, e.g. pacemaker programming.
  • Occasional requirement to move heavy equipment using safe manual handling technique.
  • Highly self motivated conscientious in approach and pays attention to detail, able to concentrate frequently for investigation and reporting.
  • Able to sustain periods of intense concentration for long periods often over 4 hours in duration.
  • Able to cope with frequently distressing circumstances in the clinical area, eg, investigates and liaises with patients/relatives in life threatening conditions in high pressure environments and cope with patient fatality during investigation and treatment.
  • Able to relate and communicate with staff at all levels and from different professions.

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES Essential

  • Ability to work cross site where service needs.
