Position:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Chief Biomedical Scientist - Immunology based at University Hospital Crosshouse. Consideration will be given to annex 21.

What you will do:

You will ensure the efficient management of the Immunology laboratory service in NHS Ayrshire and Arran on behalf of Departmental Haematology and Immunology Consultants and the Haematology Services Manager. Main duties will include liaising with the Lead Scientist in Haematology to ensure the provision of effective and optimal diagnostic services in this area, as well as performing a complex range of tests on patient samples utilising dedicated equipment, reporting and authorising results according to agreed standards, and be involved in the setting of those standards.

Furthermore, you will help in the training of unqualified staff and is expected to oversee Senior BMS, Specialist BMS, Trainee BMS and Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) staff, and respond positively to the changing demands on the service, through innovation, communication, setting standards and achieving results.

Knowledge, training and/or experience required to do the job:

The post holder will be an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, qualified to Master’s degree or equivalent educational level and must have at least 2 years’ experience working in an Immunology laboratory. Consideration will be given to annex 21 for candidates who have yet to obtain the required qualifications, which will have to be achieved within a predefined time scale.

As a team leader, you will be the first-line manager for HCPC Registered BMS staff, Trainee BMS and MLA staff. You will also deputise for the Haematology Lead in their absence and attend local and national management meetings. This post requires a high degree of written and technical accuracy as the holder will be directly involved with responsibilities for achieving and maintaining laboratory standards such as ISO15189:2022. Experience of leadership and management would be advantageous, and a good working knowledge of quality management systems is essential. Effective communication skills and a proven organisational ability are essential for this post.

Hours:

37 hours per week.

The department operates a 24/7 shift system. The post holder will not be expected to participate in this but will be expected to take part in a 1 in 4 Saturday morning rota.

Driving Licence/Car Ownership:

A car licence/car ownership is essential to this role.
