Job description

Job Overview

Applications are invited from an enthusiastic, motivated, suitably experienced Biomedical Scientist for the role of Chief Biomedical Scientist in the Royal United Hospital Cellular Pathology Laboratory, to provide leadership in operational and technical aspects of the histology service.

Situated in modern facilities within the main buildings of the hospital, the department processes over 34,000 histology requests per annum, 24,000 immunocytochemical tests and is accredited by the IBMS and UKAS.

We are interested to hear from applicants who hold HCPC registration and have MSc or FIBMS in Cellular Pathology, or equivalence, and have current experience in histology at BMS Band 7 level. A track record of supervisory/management experience is required.

Suitable candidates will need to be able to demonstrate excellent communication, leadership and change management skills.

The department has an establishment of ten Consultant Histopathologists, two Specialist Trainees and is committed to the training and development of all staff.

For further information and/or to arrange a tour of the department please contact Clive Abbott, Laboratory Manager, on 01225 825717.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder is accountable to the Head of the Department, through the Laboratory Manager for the effective performance of a laboratory to provide a broad range of highly specialized complex technical services and a high quality diagnostic service for optimal care and treatment of patients.

The BMS3 is responsible for the line management of the laboratory staff and assists the Laboratory Manager in taking forward the development of all sections of the laboratory service. The post holder is expected to bring innovation and highly developed, specialised skills to the role, undertaking any appropriately delegated responsibilities and tasks, including the authorization to order all non-pay goods from designated budget codes.

Maintaining the correct levels of stocks and ensuring the trust gets “value for money” through an ordering and procurement strategy is an important part of this role.

The BMS3 is an integral part of the laboratory management team, in providing policy development and providing the correct service as required by primary care users as well as secondary care. The post-holder is the technical specialist within their discipline.

The BMS3 will also deputise for the Laboratory Manager.
