We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurses to join our team on the Dorothea Chemotherapy Unit. Chemotherapy experience desirable but not essential.
You will have a strong commitment to excellence in patient care and a high level of communication skills, as you act as the interface between patients and other healthcare professionals.
Main duties of the job
- Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for a specified group of patients.
- Takes charge of the Day Unit as delegated by the Lead Chemotherapy Nurse for a specified period of time.
- Act as a Team Leader, delegating appropriate tasks and supervising the standard of care delivered by more junior qualified staff, unqualified staff and learner nurses in the team.
- Assist the Lead Chemotherapy Nurses in the management of preceptorship of newly qualified staff, return to nursing staff and the mentorship of nursing students and health care support workers.
- Responsible for the administration of cytotoxic chemotherapy

Job responsibilities
- Deliver a high standard of nursing care without direct supervision, based upon sound evidence base.
- To have appropriate skills in the care of the Haematology or Oncology patient to include:o Insertion of peripheral cannulao Venipunctureo Venesectiono Management of central venous access devices with appropriate advice, teaching, assessment of patients or other health care professionals in the delivery of careo Checking and administration of cytotoxic drugs and other supportive treatments
- Counselling patients offering psychological and physiological support of problems and side effects during treatment and thereafter.o Administration of blood productso Preparing patients and equipment for procedureso Monitoring patients for signs of adverse reactions, sensitivity, compatibility of drugsand/ or investigationso Order and collate results of blood tests appropriate to management of treatment.
- Undertakes and documents a comprehensive, systematic, and accurate nursing assessment of the physical, social, and spiritual needs of the patient where appropriate.
- Ensuring patients receive appropriate written information for their investigation, condition, diagnosis.
- Creates and utilises opportunities to promote health and well-being of patients in their care.
- Leads a nursing team to manage a group of patients throughout a shift.
- Undertakes a prime role in the psychological and compassionate care of patients, their relatives and team members in meeting their respective needs.
- Contributes towards effective running of the unit.
- Working within the NMC Guidelines and Trust policies recognising ones own abilities and limitations.
- Maintains a good standard of communication and interpersonal relationships with the multidisciplinary team and respect the confidentiality of patients, relatives, and colleagues.

Person Specification
Experience & Knowledge
- Minimun of 2 years Band 5 experience
- Working with Oncology/Haematology patients
- Advanced communication skills
- N59 or equivalent
Qualifications and Professional Training
- RGN
- Willing to work towards a post grad qualification in the speciality
Skills and Abilities
- IV administration
- Enthusiastic, motivated and able to motivate and instil confidence in others
- Ability to have positive working relationships
- Good health record
- Good organisational skills
- Ability to work under pressure
- Evidence based practice
- Cannulation & venapuncture
- Frequently be able to deal with patients and relatives during distressing situations.
