Job Description

We are looking for three aspiring technical leaders who feel passionately about preventing chemicals polluting the environment. You do not need to be a scientist to do this role but will need to be comfortable working with technical details and scientific recommendations. You may have experience of working for a regulator or working in industry. You must have experience of one or more of the Environment Agency’s regulatory regimes (e.g. chemicals regulation, waste management, water or air quality, contaminated land, groundwater, water resources, etc.).

Duties will include:

  • Working with our waste management experts to establish how significant different waste types are as a pathway for persistent organic pollutants entering the environment.
  • Leading on projects focussed on reducing the impacts of PFAS pollutants on the environment (e.g. reviewing environmental permits for specific industry sectors to ensure they protect the environment from harm).
  • Reviewing known information about the sources, pathways, and receptors for priority chemical pollutants and suggesting ways to break those pathways.
  • Evaluating current regulatory approaches to identify whether additional effort is needed to prevent harm to the environment and influencing teams to incorporate our ideas into their business planning.
  • Considering chemical impacts on air, land and water and shaping the Environment Agency’s approaches to regulating these three environmental compartments.
  • Working with colleagues from across the Environment Agency to ensure new regulatory interventions are implemented effectively.
  • Engaging with other regulators, government departments and trade bodies to help coordinate delivery of regulatory work.

The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don't just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities, and our environment.

The team

These roles sit within the Chemicals Regulatory Development Team in the Chemicals Programme, a national team within the Environment and Business Directorate. The team is focused on ensuring chemical risks are identified and with building robust evidence to influence policy and inform our regulatory responses. We are a dispersed team, and you will need to be comfortable working virtually via MS teams. We hold quarterly team meetings in either Birmingham or Bristol.

Experience/skills Required

You will have experience of one or more environmental regulatory regimes, either as a regulator or from working in industry. Chemicals regulation experience is desirable, but not essential. This is a technical leadership role – you do not need to be a chemist.

You will:

  • be a motivated self-starter, with a can-do approach
  • be well organised with good attention to detail
  • be good at problem solving and finding alternative solutions
  • be used to working on your own initiative and an adaptable team player
  • be comfortable working in a virtual team environment
  • be able to balance multiple pieces of work in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities
  • be flexible and able to respond to changing circumstances
  • adapt communication style to suit audience
  • be proficient in Word/PowerPoint/Excel/MS Teams and SharePoint
