Job summary

Amentum is seeking a Characterisation Specialist at our Birchwood laboratory to support materials, mechanical testing and corrosion programmes. You will gain hands-on experience with metallographic preparation, microscopy, and materials analysis on projects that support UK nuclear industry.

The role suits curious, proactive scientists with a degree in Materials Science or related field who are keen to develop skills in a collaborative laboratory.

Qualifications

• Degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Engineering, Physics or related field.
• Practical experience with metallographic prep: cutting, grinding, polishing.
• Experience using optical microscopy for materials characterisation.
• Knowledge of specimen inspection techniques and quality evaluation.
• Strong laboratory skills and meticulous record keeping.
• Commitment to safety and safe working practices.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality characterisation data for materials, corrosion and mechanical testing programs.
• Prepare metallic specimens for examination (cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, etching).
• Perform metallographic investigations using optical microscopy and related techniques.
• Conduct specimen inspections including dimensional measurements and hardness testing.
• Maintain laboratory equipment, records and documentation with traceability.
• Work safely within quality systems and support continuous improvement.
