Applications are invited for prestigious Chapman Schmidt AI in Science Fellowships, a program of Schmidt Sciences, commencing 1 September 2026. There are 2 positions available, with a duration of 2 years.
The Chapman Schmidt AI in Science Fellows will produce independent and original research, using AI to advance science, within the Maths Department and the I-X Centre for AI in Science. These fellowships aim to identify excellent researchers and accelerate their use of AI to advance and disrupt Science or Engineering. AI is interpreted broadly, including topics like Bayesian Inference and Robotics; Science covers natural sciences and engineering, excluding clinical medical themes and medical imaging. Examples include Bayesian optimization for molecular or materials design, machine learning for single-cell data, physics-based ML for turbine design, and astrostatistics. These posts are not suitable for generic AI research; candidates must aim to substantially advance a specific scientific area. Applicants may see themselves as AI researchers tackling scientific problems or science researchers using AI to transform their field. Extensive AI knowledge is not required, as training is provided.
Candidates will:
Fellows will join the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Network of researchers and a cohort based at the I-X Centre for AI in Science, with tailored training and career development. The fellowships are flexible and independent, allowing exploration while drawing on faculty mentors.
Additional support is available for women in AI in Science, including funds for career development and a community of women in AI. The I-X Women in Artificial Intelligence aims to enhance women’s representation and support their full potential.
This is a full-time, fixed-term, 2-year position based at White City Campus, with a primary mentor in the Maths Department.
