Job description

Our client is a well-respected SME business within the Manufacturing / Engineering Industry, ideally located in Staffordshire and easily accessible from across the East and West Midlands.

Due to continued growth and the retirement of a long-term employee, FRS has been enlisted to assist with the recruitment of a Finance Director / CFO.

This position works closely with the Managing Director / Board and is the No 1 in finance for businesses operating across the UK, US, and China. It involves managing the Group’s finances, including treasury, audit, corporation tax, VAT, legal, and HR matters.

The successful candidate will be part of the Management Team in a progressive, profitable, and fast-moving environment, focusing on driving tangible benefits to business performance. The role covers diverse responsibilities including M&A, FP&A, Costing and Pricing, Working Capital, and Cash Flow management.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Production of monthly management accounts, including profit and loss, balance sheet, cash flows, budgets, and variance analysis, while coordinating statutory accounts and audits.
  2. Group reporting of monthly management information to the Board.
  3. Implementation and enforcement of robust internal controls to ensure reliable, timely management data and accurate accounting records.
  4. Leading the annual budgeting process, financial modelling, and developing the five-year strategic plan.
  5. Managing working capital, including preparing a 13-week rolling cash flow forecast.
  6. Managing and coaching a finance team of four, including a finance manager and sales and purchase ledger administrators.
  7. Developing and maintaining detailed costing and pricing models for key services.
  8. Handling HR and Payroll.
  9. Managing the Company’s property leases and insurance policies.
  10. Overseeing the Group’s finance operations in the UK, US, and China.
  11. Leading mergers and acquisitions.

Applicants should be ACA / ACCA / CIMA qualified with at least 5 years PQE and proven experience in a finance leadership role (Financial Controller, Head of Finance, or Finance Director).

Experience within an SME business with £5-£40m turnover and background in Manufacturing / Engineering is desirable.

Additional key skills include:

  • Knowledge of forecasting, management reporting, cash management, and banking/funder relationships.
  • Strong technical knowledge of finance and reporting.
  • Expertise in Excel and familiarity with accounting / ERP systems.
  • Passion, energy, and drive.
  • Ability to challenge practices constructively and propose solutions.
  • Confident decision-maker with excellent communication skills, capable of engaging at all levels, including Board and shareholder reporting.
  • Team player capable of gaining credibility within the Management Team and Board.
  • Strong decision-making and commercial acumen, with the ability to negotiate with customers and suppliers, identify opportunities, and possess a “can do” attitude.
