Job description

CESR Senior Clinical Fellow Intensive Care Medicine

Applications are invited for the post CESR Senior Clinical Fellow on the Intensive Care Unit based at the Royal Surrey Hospital. This appointment will be available for applicants who have experience of working at the level of ST4 or above (or equivalent), in intensive care medicine or an acute medical/surgical speciality or anaesthesia. Advanced airway skills are highly desirable to this post.

The Trust is seeking a motivated and ambitious individual from a variety of acute specialities who wish to gain further experience in critical care by working in a large, busy department serving a big district general hospital, specialist centre for major cancer surgery and tertiary referral centre for hepatobiliary and upper gastrointestinal emergencies, for the region. We have an international reputation for our standardised perioperative care for major elective cancer surgery, in particular for oesophageal resection, and are one of the 34 centres internationally to be recognised by ERAS Society as an International Centre of Excellence for enhanced recovery, we are also one of the leading centres to adopt the National Emergency Laparotomy Pathway. These pathways, and our strong multi-disciplinary team, have contributed to a much improved patient experience and outcome and a very low ICU standardised mortality ratio (ICNARC data).

Main duties of the job

This post is specifically aimed at highly motivated senior doctors who aim to gain entry to the GMC specialist register to Intensive Care Medicine via the CESR pathway. Successful applicants will be mentored from Consultants who have undergone this process themselves. There will be regular meetings where your experience to date will be reviewed and guidance given on practical experience / placements required in additional to qualifications, managerial, leadership, research and teaching experience required to provide equivalent experience of a peri-CCT doctor.

The ICU is approved by Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery for Advanced Training in Intensive Care Medicine. The post holders will work as part of a team of doctors in the ICU on an eight person rota with 1:8 weekends and 1:8 nights.

The post holder will have a named educational supervisor and meet regularly to set educational and career targets to complete. They will have all the same educational opportunities as trainees and be granted study leave and a study leave budget.
