Overview
Performs duties of a Food Service Worker/Catering Associate I as assigned, responsible for patient meal service on assigned units, including menu selections, tray assembly, tray delivery and pick-up, special requests and needs, and in-between meal food delivery. This includes printing and delivering menus, retrieving menus which may involve computer system functions, floor stock processes, assembling trays, and diet education.
Responsibilities
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Essential Functions)
- Answers questions relating to the ordering, assembling, delivering and retrieving of all food items to patients and their spoken menus.
- Assists Dietitian with monitoring of patients who are NPO, on liquid diets or need to have intake recorded.
- Checks patient trays for menu compliance, accuracy, and completeness as needed or assigned.
- Trains current and future employees in computer system functions including diet definitions, floor stock process, and par levels for individual units.
- Tracks allergies, food temperature logs, and unit refrigerator logs to maintain compliance with all rules and regulations.
- Ensures quality service reflected in internal or external patient satisfaction survey results.
- Communicates patient food issues, concerns, and needs to Food & Medical Nutrition Services.
- Completes spoken menu process with patients.
- Interacts with Nursing regarding patient nutrition needs and unit food service needs.
- Performs service recovery as needed with patients and nursing.
- Reacts accurately to changes ensuring efficient service timing and accuracy of modified diets.
- Understands dietary restrictions on special, modified diets to meet food preferences within guidelines.
- Operates the hospital computer system to generate reports, menus, and labels, and the EMR system for patient location and orders.
- Distributes and assists patients, collects menus by unit daily, and inputs selections into the hospital computer system.
- Contacts isolation patients by telephone regarding menu choices.
- Inventories and delivers par level supplies accurately to designated nursing units.
- Inspects unit pantries for cleanliness, labeling, dating, and proper temperature maintenance.
- Tallies special items needed for each meal.
- Handles patient complaints courteously.
- Checks trays assembled on the Tray line for accuracy, appearance, and cleanliness.
Qualifications
JOB SPECIFICATIONS (Minimum Requirements)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES- Demonstrates full understanding of job functions by passing a basic skills test of dietetic.
- Knowledge of modified diets and related restrictions based on passing a written test.
- Knowledge of infection control and sanitation with food temperatures and handwashing.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; proficient in basic mathematical skills.
- Ability to problem-solve independently.
- Reading and writing abilities required.
- Ability to interact congenially with patients and staff.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English (or other languages as necessary).
- Able to concentrate on fine detail with constant interruptions.
- Able to understand and relate to multiple ideas simultaneously.
- Able to remember multiple tasks/assignments over long periods.
- Requires a minimum of six months education in diet office terminology and computer skills.
EDUCATION
- High School Diploma/GED Equivalent Required
- 6 months of working experience as Food Service Worker I or Catering Associate I required.
- 1 Healthcare/Medical experience required.
- 0.5 Food Services experience required.
