Job description

Who are we?

Howden is a collective – a group of talented and passionate people all around the world. Together, we have pushed the boundaries of insurance. We are united by a shared passion and no-limits mindset, and our strength lies in our ability to collaborate as a powerful international team comprised of 18,000 employees spanning over 100 countries.

People join Howden for many different reasons, but they stay for the same one: our culture. It’s what sets us apart, and the reason our employees have been turning down headhunters for years. Whatever your priorities – work / life balance, career progression, sustainability, volunteering – you’ll find like-minded people driving change at Howden.

The Role

We are seeking a Catastrophe Analyst to join our Central Cat Modelling team. Our Industry leading analytics offerings provide our clients with cutting-edge insight and support in a way our competitors do not.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a proactive, analytical thinker with strong technical skills and a keen interest in catastrophe modelling and delegated underwriting. The role will have great exposure, working with stakeholders at all levels: brokers, markets and clients.

This role is focused on the delivery of modelling and exposure analytics for Howden’s delegated authority business, namely Bowood. Bowood is Howden’s specialist delegated authority division and one of the largest delegated binding authority brokers to Lloyd’s with $1.5bn of gross written premium handled annually.

While this role focuses on delegated authority, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work across other classes as the need arises to support other members of the wider team.

What will you be doing?

  • Support catastrophe risk assessment for delegated authority (binder) business across the US and other global territories.
  • Work with outsourced partner to ensure delivery of appropriately cleansed data.
  • Run and interpret catastrophe models (e.g. RMS, AIR).
  • Collaborate with brokers, clients and other colleagues to support pricing, risk selection and capacity placement.
  • Assist in model sensitivity analyses, working closely with brokers and clients to help shape their portfolios.
  • Support the team’s event response services by helping quantify potential risk to binder portfolios.
  • Maintain and improve catastrophe reporting processes, dashboards, and templates using SQL, Power BI and/or similar tools.
  • Participate in the evaluation of new catastrophe risk tools and data sources, making recommendations for adoption.
  • Contribute to the wider Cat team and Analytics function.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Relevant London Market Catastrophe Modelling experience, ideally with some exposure to delegated binding authorities.
  • Experience working with catastrophe modelling platforms, RMS and/or AIR.
  • Excellent IT skills is a must, proficiency in Excel and a good working knowledge of SQL; other computer programming skills is a plus.
  • Familiarity with a data visualisation tool such as Power BI is desirable.
  • The ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to brokers and clients.
  • Strong communication skills; able to present complex information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure, multi-task and prioritise.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a quantitative field.
What do we offer in return?

A career that you define. At Howden, we value diversity – there is no one Howden type. Instead, we’re looking for individuals who share the same values as us:

  • Our successes have all come from someone brave enough to try something new.
  • We support each other in the small everyday moments and the bigger challenges.
  • We are determined to make a positive difference at work and beyond.
Reasonable adjustments

We're committed to providing reasonable accommodations at Howden to ensure that our positions align well with your needs. Besides the usual adjustments such as software, IT, and office setups, we can also accommodate other changes such as flexible hours or hybrid working.

If you're excited by this role but have some doubts about whether it’s the right fit for you, send us your application – if your profile fits the role’s criteria, we will be in touch to assist in helping to get you set up with any reasonable adjustments you may require.
