Job summary

Connect2Swindon seeks an experienced Casual / Seasonal Out of Hours Highway Operative to join the Swindon team. You will respond to emergency callouts, support winter service operations and perform traffic management duties in line with Chapter 8 requirements.

The role requires a valid HGV Class 2 licence, Streetworks Operative qualification, and CSCS card. You will work outdoors in all weather, coordinating with colleagues and emergency services as needed.

Qualifications

• Full valid HGV Class 2 driving licence is required.
• Streetworks Operative qualification is required.
• Chapter 8 Traffic Signing, Lighting and Guarding certification required.
• CSCS Card required.

Responsibilities

• Respond to out-of-hours callouts on a rota basis.
• Support emergency highway maintenance and winter service operations.
• Assist with gritting, snow clearance and severe weather response activities.
• Install and remove traffic management, signage and barriers per Chapter 8 requirements.
• Operate plant, machinery and powered tools safely.
• Follow RAMS at all times.
• Maintain records, timesheets and materials usage.
• Ensure vehicles and tools are kept clean and serviceable.
• Deliver work in line with Health & Safety legislation and procedures.
• Attend training, toolbox talks and site briefings.

Are you an experienced highways, construction or groundworks operative looking for flexible, rewarding work?

We're seeking reliable and safety-focused individuals to join our Out of Hours Highway Operations team, supporting emergency highway maintenance and seasonal winter services across Swindon.

This is a hands-on role where you'll play a vital part in ensuring the safe passage of residents, visitors and road users, responding to emergencies, severe weather events and highway incidents outside normal working hours.

Working as part of a dedicated team, you'll help maintain the highway network through winter gritting, snow clearance, emergency repairs and traffic management activities.

What You'll Be Doing

• Responding to out-of-hours highway callouts on a rota basis.
• Supporting emergency highway maintenance and winter service operations.
• Assisting with gritting, snow clearance and severe weather response activities.
• Installing and removing traffic management, signage and barriers in line with Chapter 8 requirements.
• Operating plant, machinery, powered hand tools and specialist equipment safely.
• Following Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) at all times.
• Maintaining accurate records, timesheets and material usage.
• Ensuring vehicles, tools and equipment are kept clean, safe and serviceable.
• Delivering work in accordance with Health & Safety legislation and company procedures.
• Attending training, toolbox talks and site briefings as required.
• Working collaboratively with colleagues, contractors and emergency services.

About You

You’ll be an experienced highways or construction operative with a strong commitment to safety and teamwork.

You’ll ideally have:

• Experience in highway maintenance, civil engineering, construction or groundworks.
• Knowledge of traffic management and safe working practices on the public highway.
• Experience working with CAT and Genny equipment.
• Confidence using plant, machinery and powered tools.
• Awareness of asbestos and other site hazards.
• The ability to remain calm and professional in emergency situations.
• Good communication skills and a positive, team-focused approach.
• Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Essential Requirements

• Full valid driving licence HGV class 2.
• Streetworks Operative qualification.
• Chapter 8 Traffic Signing, Lighting and Guarding certification.
• CSCS Card.

Desirable Qualifications

• First Aid certification.
• Asbestos Awareness qualification.
• First Responder training.
