Job summary

Durham University is seeking a casual Marker, Demonstrator and Teaching Support in Chemistry. The role covers three teaching-related areas with 6 hours per week and an ongoing closing date. You will contribute to marking, guiding practicals, and supporting teaching delivery across sessions.

Successful applicants will maintain subject knowledge, provide feedback, and help ensure safe, well-run classes while supporting students and adhering to departmental policies.

Responsibilities

  • Marker: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the subject area.
  • Marker: Set and/or mark assessments according to relevant published criteria.
  • Marker: Keep accurate records of marks awarded, liaising with the departmental assessment team as necessary.
  • Marker: Provide oral and/or written feedback to students in line with departmental policy, procedures, and timescales.
  • Demonstrator: Guide students in the experimental laboratory, computing class, workshop or similar.
  • Demonstrator: Assist the class leader as required (e.g., developing enhanced experiments).
  • Demonstrator: Assist in the delivery of classes.
  • Demonstrator: Attend annual briefing for demonstrators.
  • Demonstrator: Attend training sessions for each activity.
  • Demonstrator: Assist the class supervisor in running the session.
  • Demonstrator: Be present throughout each taught session, with reasonable breaks.
  • Demonstrator: Ensure safe working practices and good order.
  • Demonstrator: Provide support for students in practical classes.
  • Demonstrator: Help ensure appropriate student conduct.
  • Teaching Support: Maintain registers and monitor attendance.
  • Teaching Support: Support delivery of specific elements of the teaching programme as specified by the relevant department.
  • Teaching Support: Assist with the production of learning and teaching materials.
  • Teaching Support: Assist and direct student projects as required.
  • Teaching Support: Help ensure appropriate student conduct and adherence to ethical guidelines, implementing the University's code of conduct and reporting any concerns to the academic mentor.
  • Teaching Support: Monitor the welfare of the student(s) and report any concerns immediately.
