About the role

As a Casual Library and Information Assistant, you'll help create a welcoming and engaging library experience for customers of all ages. Working across our library service, you'll support day‑to‑day operations, assist with enquiries, promote library resources, and help deliver a range of community activities and events.

You’ll work closely with residents, helping them access information and make the most of the services available. This is a varied and rewarding role where you’ll play an important part in connecting people with their local community and supporting a modern, customer‑focused library service.

You will work on an as and when required basis, covering holidays and sickness across the Public Library Service including the Mobile Library. This work is often at short notice across all or part of the working day.

Opening hours vary and include evening openings until 8pm and Sundays, so a flexible attitude to work is required.

About you

You will be enthusiastic and reliable with excellent communication skills as you will deal with enquiries from members of the public of all ages and from a diverse range of backgrounds. Experience of working in a Library or customer‑focused environment is required for this role.

Good book knowledge and a passion for reading is essential, alongside the ability to share this with Library customers and partners to encourage them to develop a love of reading.

IT skills are an essential part of the role as you will use our Library Management System, for which training will be given, as well as assisting members of the public using our IT Suites.
