Job description

The Role

We are seeking to recruit a reliable, enthusiastic and self-motivated people to assist in the safe delivery of the high-profile services of Waste Collection in a flexible role covering other colleagues holidays and absences.

A full current UK driving licence is essential, as the post holder will be required to:

Safely drive LGV’s and other Council vehicles. It is essential you hold an LGV Driving Licence Class C and have the skills required to manoeuvre large vehicles in restricted and difficult areas. Experience of rear steer vehicles would be advantageous.
Deliver the frontline service of waste and recycling collections.
Supervise a team of refuse collectors in the practical collection of waste and recyclables.
A current CPC card and the ability to undertake heavy manual work is essential. Previous experience in similar work is desirable.

This is a responsible post and it is essential that you have an appreciation of the contribution that good waste management practices can have to improving the environment, the image of the region and objectives of the Council. You must possess good communication skills, be able to supervise and motivate a small team. You must have the ability to undertake a range of duties and to learn quickly, as well as undertaking tasks with a minimum of supervision. You will be required to work both as part of a team and independently.

Communicating clearly and courteously both to your work colleagues and members of the public is paramount as is your ability to work to written instructions. You will have knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and you are able to clearly demonstrate an understanding of transport compliance and regulations.

You must be flexible and able to work early mornings, evenings and weekends in line with business needs. You will be required to work in adverse weather conditions and to handle waste. Full training will be given to the successful candidate. There are no set hours of work for this position. The working days are from 7:00am to 4:45pm. On occasion you may be required to work from 6:00am until 6:00pm.

This casual post is based at White Lund Depot, Westgate, Morecambe.

The successful candidate must be available if required to work on Bank Holidays which are normal working days (except for 25th December/26th December and 1st January), public holidays and extra “catch-up” days as directed by the Operations Manager. Catch up days for December bank holidays will either be the Saturday immediately before the bank holiday or the Saturday after.
