Responsibilities

• Lead, allocate duties to and supervise a small team of invigilators, ensuring responsibilities are understood.
• Deliver clear examination instructions to groups up to 200 students in a sports hall setting.
• Coordinate examination room operations and escalate irregularities to the Exams Office as per JCQ rules.
• Undertake the full duties of an Invigilator as required.
• Maintain security of exam papers at all times and ensure exam conduct complies with JCQ guidelines.
• Collect question papers, attendance registers and materials from the Exams Office before an exam.
• Check the exam room setup complies with JCQ regulations.
• Create a calm environment to help candidates perform at their best.
• Accurately complete attendance registers and note late arrivals.
• Be vigilant during exams and record incidents as they occur.
• Collect and collate completed scripts and return them to the Exams Office.

Cardinal Newman College is seeking confident, organised Lead Invigilators to support the safe, fair and efficient delivery of internal and external examinations.

You will lead a small team of invigilators, give clear instructions to groups of 15 to 200 students, and act as the main point of contact in the examination room. You will ensure that examinations run smoothly and that all relevant procedures are followed throughout.

The Role

As a Casual Lead Invigilator, you will:

• Lead, allocate duties to and supervise a small team of invigilators, ensuring that all team members understand their responsibilities and follow the required procedures.
• Confidently address and deliver clear, effective examination instructions to groups of students, including cohorts of up to 200 in a sports hall setting.
• Coordinate the examination room, make appropriate operational decisions within JCQ requirements and elevate irregularities promptly to the Exams Office.
• Undertake the full duties of an Invigilator as required.
• Maintain the security of exam papers at all times and ensure that the conduct of the exam takes place within the guidelines set down by the JCQ.
• Collect question papers, attendance registers and all other necessary materials from the Exams Office before an exam.
• Check the exam room is set up in accordance with JCQ regulations.
• Ensure a calm environment to give candidates the best possible opportunity to be successful in their exams.
• Accurately complete attendance registers noting the arrival time of any student arriving after the start of the exam.
• Be vigilant at all times during an exam and record any incidents that occur.
• Collect and collate completed scripts at the end of the exam and return them to the Exams Office.

Hours and availability

This is a casual, claim‑paid role. Work is available during examination periods in October, November, December, January, March, May and June, with shifts between 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday.

Applicants must be available for:

• a minimum of five days during the January examination period; and a minimum of ten days across May and June.

Examinations take place at Cardinal Newman College and The Lancaster University School of Mathematics, close to the College site.

The post will be paid at £14 per hour (plus accrued holiday pay). Hours worked at the non‑Lead rate are paid at £13.45 per hour (plus accrued holiday pay).

Salay will be paid on a claim basis. Claims received by the end of the month will be paid the following month. Your salary will be paid by BACs transfer into your bank account on the last banking day of the month (except at Christmas when payment is made before the holiday)
