Job summary

Somerset Council is seeking a Casual Instructor to lead outdoor activities and residential courses foryoung people across Somerset. You will help participants build confidence, learn new skills, and enjoy safe, engaging adventures in a supportive team.

Responsibilities include delivering adventures, maintaining equipment, and safeguarding wellbeing. A First Aid qualification and suitable outdoor activity credentials are required, with opportunities for flexible, hybrid working.

Qualifications

  • Experience delivering outdoor and adventurous activities for young people.
  • Experience in residential settings, risk assessment and safe working practices.
  • Hold one or more of the following qualifications: RCI, Paddlesport Instructor, Mountain Bike Leader, Lowland Leader, Duke of Edinburgh Assessor, or Archery GB Instructor.

  • Maintain and inspect activity equipment, ensuring the highest standards of safety.
  • Safeguard and promote the wellbeing of every participant.
  • Work across four outdoor centres set within the Quantock and Mendip Hills.
  • Provide excellent customer care and create a welcoming, positive experience.

Job description

Are you passionate about the outdoors and creating memorable experiences for young people and groups? As a Casual Instructor, you'll lead and support a wide range of exciting outdoor activities, both on and off-site, helping participants build confidence, develop new skills and enjoy safe, engaging adventures. You'll play a key role in delivering residential courses, providing excellent customer care, maintaining high standards of safety and safeguarding, and ensuring every visitor receives a welcoming and positive experience. Working as part of a supportive team, you'll help create an environment where learning, adventure and personal growth can thrive.

How You'll Make a Difference
  • Deliver inspiring outdoor adventures and learning experiences for young people across Somerset and beyond.
  • Help shape and develop exciting activities, both on-site and in the great outdoors.
  • Give young people the chance to build confidence, learn new skills and discover what they're capable of.
  • Maintain and inspect activity equipment, ensuring the highest standards of safety.
  • Play an important role in safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of every participant.
  • Work across four stunning outdoor centres set within the beautiful Quantock and Mendip Hills.
  • Join a service that focuses on what young people can achieve, helping them imagine, discover and succeed.
    Experience delivering outdoor and adventurous activities for young people.
  • Experience in residential settings, risk assessment and safe working practices.
  • Hold one or more of the following qualifications: RCI, Paddlesport Instructor, Mountain Bike Leader, Lowland Leader, Duke of Edinburgh Assessor, or Archery GB Instructor.
  • Valid First Aid qualification.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with children and adults.
  • Confident using ICT systems and equipment.
