The Purpose
To coach and develop young players within the Foundation Development Phase (U9–U12) at Manchester United Academy, ensuring alignment with the club’s coaching philosophy, values, and long-term player development model. The role supports the holistic development of high-potential players, fostering technical excellence, tactical understanding, and personal growth in a safe, challenging, and enjoyable environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver high-quality coaching sessions in line with Manchester United’s Academy playing and coaching philosophy.
- Assist the lead age group coach with ensuring all activity for the players is of the highest standard.
- Support the long-term athletic and personal development of players aged 9 to 12, with a focus on enjoyment, creativity, and skill acquisition.
- Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team (MDT), including sport science, analysis, education, and welfare staff, to ensure holistic player support.
- Prepare players for progression to the Youth Development Phase (U13–U16), ensuring a seamless transition.
- Contribute to regular coaching meetings and ongoing professional development initiatives.
- Assist with talent identification and trial processes within the Foundation Phase.
- Represent Manchester United’s standards and values in all interactions, both on and off the pitch.
Skills & Experience
- Passionate about youth development and long-term player growth
- Committed to continual learning and reflective practice
- Professional, reliable, and a strong team player
- Emotionally intelligent and empathetic in dealing with young athletes
- UEFA B License (or working towards)
- FA Youth Award (or equivalent)
- Experience coaching children within the 9–12 age range
- Understanding of child development and age-appropriate coaching principles
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly with young players and parents
- Proven ability to work within a multidisciplinary environment
- Enhanced DBS check and safeguarding training
Desirable:
- FA Advanced Youth Award (FDP-specific)
- Previous experience in an elite academy environment (Category 1)
- Familiarity with EPPP requirements and player development frameworks
- Knowledge of Manchester United’s Academy ethos and history
