Who we are:

We are the UK’s biggest port, central to the country’s economy and ambitions for growth. We connect the UK to the world, but we are much more than a conventional port.

We are driven by our purpose to protect and improve the 95 mile stretch of the River Thames which is tidal – from Teddington Lock on the border of Surrey, through the heart of London, Kent, Essex and out to the North Sea.

The Statutory Consents and Compliance team is responsible for the processing of applications for consent and vessel licenses, and the investigation and enforcement of unlicensed and non-compliant river works and dredging along the River Thames.

The role:

We are currently looking for a Case Manager to join its Statutory Consents and Compliance team within the Planning & Development Department.

As Case Manager, you will manage a varied caseload of statutory consent applications and compliance matters, ensuring cases are progressed, determined and closed in line with statutory requirements, internal procedures, KPIs and agreed service standards.

You will work closely with applicants, licensees, consultees, statutory bodies, internal departments and other stakeholders to obtain information, coordinate responses and support effective case management. The role requires sound judgement, clear communication and the ability to balance operational, environmental, statutory and stakeholder considerations while maintaining PLA standards.

Key responsibilities:
  • Manage statutory consent applications and compliance cases from receipt through to determination and closure.
  • Assess information and evidence fairly and consistently to support proportionate recommendations and decisions.
  • Maintain accurate records across relevant systems, files and archives.
  • Respond clearly and promptly to internal and external enquiries on licensing, land ownership, statutory consenting and compliance matters.
  • Build effective working relationships with applicants, licensees, consultees, colleagues and other stakeholders.
  • Attend site visits and meetings, providing advice, input and updates as required.
  • Identify practical improvements to processes, service delivery and record management.
What we are looking for:

Essential:

  • Experience of statutory consent applications, compliance matters or comparable regulatory casework.
  • Strong analytical, written and administrative skills.
  • Ability to review and assess evidence and maintain accurate, comprehensive case records.
  • Confident communicator, able to engage effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Good understanding of regulatory processes and relevant legislation.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of the PLA’s statutory functions and powers under the Port of London Act 1968 (as amended).
  • Qualification in planning, law, environmental management, marine operations, regulation or a related discipline.
In return, we offer a competitive benefits package:
  • 28 days annual leave (plus Bank Holidays)
  • Medical Cash Plan (Westfield Health)
  • Generous pension - up to 14% employer contribution
  • Employee Assistance Programme and access to Wellbeing Resources
  • Discounted gym memberships and cycle to work scheme
  • Salary sacrifice car scheme (Tusker Cars)
  • Reward and recognition portal, with access to a range of discounts
