Job description

Carpenter - DT Technician Role in Secondary Schools

Location: Northampton
Start Date: September 2025 Full-Time Term-Time Only Long-Term Opportunities

Are you a qualified or experienced carpenter looking for a new challenge outside of the trade? Would you like to use your practical skills to support the next generation of makers and designers?

Secondary schools across Northampton are seeking Carpenters to join their Design & Technology (DT) departments as Technicians from September 2025. This is a fantastic opportunity to step into education and bring real-world experience into the classroom-supporting students in a safe, creative, and hands-on learning environment.

About the Role:

  • Support DT lessons (woodwork, resistant materials, and construction skills) by preparing materials, maintaining tools, and setting up equipment

  • Use your carpentry knowledge to demonstrate correct techniques and workshop safety

  • Maintain and repair machinery (e.g. band saws, drills, disc sanders) and carry out routine safety checks

  • Ensure the workshop is clean, well-organised, and fully stocked with materials

  • Assist teachers and students during practical tasks, helping students gain confidence with tools and projects

  • Promote a strong culture of health and safety, including compliance with risk assessments and safety procedures

  • Engage in school projects, displays, and learning opportunities linked to construction, sustainability, and design

We're Looking For:

  • Background in carpentry, joinery, or construction with hands-on workshop experience

  • Knowledge of tools, timber, and woodcraft techniques

  • A practical, proactive approach and good attention to detail

  • Confidence in handling machinery safely (training can be provided)

  • Willingness to support young people and share trade skills in a classroom environment

  • Strong communication and teamworking skills

  • DBS clearance (or willingness to obtain one) and understanding of safeguarding procedures

What's on Offer:

  • Full time, permanent positions

  • A supportive school environment where your skills are valued

  • Opportunities for training and professional development in education and safeguarding

  • The chance to make a direct impact on student learning and inspire future careers in construction, design, and engineering

  • A rewarding role for someone ready to step away from the site and into the classroom

If you're a skilled carpenter with a passion for craftsmanship and a desire to support young learners, apply now to become a DT Technician in a Northampton secondary school this September.
