Job description

We are looking for a Carpenter to join our Building Services team on-site at Royal London Hospital.

The Purpose of the role will be to carry out fabric (including fixtures and fittings), maintenance reactive tasks and small works to a high standard. To ensure the fabric of the buildings provides a safe environment for patient’s, public and staff and to maintain contractual compliance.

This will include general painting, joinery, flooring and other fabric tasks to a high standard.

You’ll:

  • Support the Estates Management in the provision of a 24hr maintenance Service within the LRH.
  • To carry out general decoration including:-
    • To prepare all existing surfaces for decoration.
    • To carry out jointing to stud walling, erection of dry walls, to hang all types of wallpaper and apply all types of paints and varnishes to a variety of surfaces.
    • To carry out glazing works and tile bathrooms and showers, kitchens etc.
    • To carry out demolition work and site clearance.
    • To erect suspended ceilings.
    • To paint finished stud walling, including priming of surfaces
  • To carry out general joiner work including:-
    • machining of timber and fabrication of new joinery
    • Carry out repairs to ironmongery, blinds, door furniture and glazing
    • Prepared to erect and dismantle own scaffolding after training
    • Varnishing new joinery where necessary
    • Key cutting
    • Cut and construct metal framing systems.
  • Carry out repairs to all types of floor finishes. Vinyl sheet and tiles, carpet, ceramic tiles
  • Carry out repairs to brickwork, plaster and tiles (floor)
  • To work with associated building trades as required.
  • To work safely with heavy equipment, work at heights and within confined spaces.
  • To specify stores and equipment required for the task in hand.
  • To assist with minor plumbing works on sanitary ware and foul drainage.
  • A recognised fabric specific apprenticeship with a minimum of City & Guilds Craft certificate or equivalent ie. A base level of theoretical knowledge
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant trade experience
  • Knowledge of range of procedures for building and repair
  • Good knowledge of H&S Legislation
  • Experience of building maintenance fabric
  • Experience of working in a hospital environment
  • Experience of lone working
  • Knowledge of hospital specifics (HTM’s)
  • Knowledge of Health Building Notifications (HBN)
