Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and respond to emergencies.

Full time (37hrs per week, all year round) on a shift pattern basis of morning and afternoons. Temporary until June 2026

About the Role

Our Caretakers fulfil a key role at the College by ensuring that all buildings are available, accessible and suitable for the use of learners, staff and visitors. This role is critical to ensuring that we have a safe, clean and welcoming campus environment. Your role and how you deal with people in a professional and friendly way will shape staff and visitor's views of the overall look and feel of the College Campus.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in shift rota to ensure an Estates presence on campus whenever the College buildings are open; conduct procedures to open and maintain security of college premises, and keep premises and equipment secure during the day.
  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness of college buildings and grounds by removing refuse and emptying bins.
  • Promote general health and safety by keeping corridors and fire exits clear, and reporting spills, trips or hazards.
  • Ensure rooms are prepared for use, setting up rooms for curriculum areas or meeting rooms, and assist with staff room moves or rearrangement of furniture.
  • Ensure that goods/documents, post and parcels are delivered quickly to the correct areas within college buildings so that departments can work effectively.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs, advise on suggested improvements to the general environment, and support risk assessments and pre‑planned maintenance programmes.
  • Respond to College emergencies, including evacuation in the case of a fire/fire drill and directing emergency services as appropriate; also handle lift breakdowns to release trapped persons.
  • Assist in the provision of First Aid as and when required.
Qualifications
  • Prior experience in a maintenance/security/caretaking role or similar (ideally within education, but not essential).
  • Hold a Level 2 (or equivalent) qualification in English and Maths or be willing to work toward it.
  • Experience with shift work and good organizational skills.
Reporting & Collaboration

You will report to the Estates and Facilities Management Team and work co‑operatively with colleagues across all College campuses and premises.
