About us

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS we're committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We're committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Job responsibilities

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced pharmacist to lead the pharmacy service for the Trauma and orthopaedics Care Group. UHS is a designated trauma centre for the South of England so you will see a mixture of acute trauma patients and elective orthopaedic patients.

The lead pharmacist will work closely as part of the multidisciplinary team, linking in with ward teams, consultant surgeons, ortho-geriatricians and specialist nurses to ensure safe and effective provision of pharmaceutical care to this patient group. There is a significant amount of microbiology input required for these patients so you will be a key player working closely with the consultant microbiologist for T&O and attending ward rounds to ensure appropriate use of antibiotics.

As the lead for the care group, you will manage the service provided by the junior pharmacists and technicians on rotation. You will also be expected to represent pharmacy at monthly meetings including the care group governance meeting. You will be asked to line manage one of the rotational band 7 pharmacists which will give you management experience. We have a large team of pharmacists and technicians at UHS who you will work closely with on a day to day basis.

You will be supported by an experienced band 8b lead pharmacist for the Division that T&O is part of. UHS has a strong focus on further education so we can support you to undertake further study in a clinical or managerial area and will support you gaining an independent prescriber qualification also. This role would equally suit an experienced orthopaedic or surgical pharmacist, or someone with a solid grounding in surgical or medical specialities who would like to specialise for the first time into a more senior management role, while still maintaining a clinical focus.
