Job summary

A supportive community organization in Northern Ireland is seeking a Health Care Assistant to provide vital daily living support to individuals with intellectual disabilities. This role requires a minimum of QQI Level 5 in healthcare, flexibility for various shifts, and strong communication skills. The ideal candidate will build supportive relationships, maintain care plans, and work collaboratively with a dedicated team to enhance the quality of life for the members we serve.

Job Description – Health Care Assistant

Health Care Assistant

This is a 39.0 hr a week position. The role will involve assisting in the provision of health & social care in all aspects of daily life for our Core members that we support. The HCA will build strong supportive relationship and assist our Core members with support in all aspects of daily living in line with the needs, will and preference of the individual and as outlined in an agreed care plan. He/she will ensure that they are being met through professional work practices. We would ask that they must be flexible in their approach to service provision and should have the ability to work as a member of a team.

The applicant must have a minimum of a Fetac /QQI 5 in healthcare/social care or social care degree. There is a 6 month probationary period applying to the employment.

Job Purpose & Role
  • To build strong supportive relationship with Core members.
  • To be responsible for the daily routines and welfare of the Core Members within the house you are working in.
  • You will be accountable to the House Leader and Residential Coordinator ( PIC).
  • To ensure that the Core members Care Plans are observed and maintained so L’Arche can with the core members, ensure that they have the best quality of life.
  • To ensure that the Residential Service is run in keeping with the ethos and spirituality of L’Arche as outlined in our Identity and Mission Statements
  • To assist the House Leader and Deputy House Leader in regard to compiling and presenting reports as required.
  • To work with the volunteer Live in Assistants for the smooth running of the house
  • To promote the dignity and image of the Core Members.
  • Must be willing to be flexible to cover the 7 day week roster, permia is paid for Sunday, BH and sleep-ins if required
  • To maintain the Health and Safety of the working area, maintenance of written records, monitoring accidents, incidents, reporting and recording them appropriately
Essential Skills And Experience
  • Experienced in working with people who have an intellectual disability.
  • Fluent English and excellent written and communication skills.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Be actively involved in the individuals care and support, person centered planning, playing an important part in the continuing assessment and review of the individuals needs and progress.
  • Contribute by working closely with other members of the staff team, helping promote good practice, taking part in staff meetings, and contributing to meeting objectives.
  • Knowledge or experience of HIQA audits.
  • Ability to ensure a safe work environment
  • Basic hygiene and infection control knowledge
  • Proficient IT skills to include Excel and Word applications.
  • Must be willing and able to work rosters that include both days, nights, sleepovers, late evenings and week-ends.
  • Full clean driving license (minimum 2 years).
