Job summary

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a consultant physician to support cardiology services. The post involves running three cardiology clinics weekly (four hours each) with a focus on new patients and some follow-up, plus participation in ward rounds and departmental meetings.

The role includes five-day ward consultations with a 24-hour referral turnaround and no on-call commitment. Mentoring and CPD opportunities are provided within the Trust.

Responsibilities

• Undertake 3 cardiology clinics per week (4 hours each) and see predominantly new patients with some follow-up capacity.
• Ensure adequate secretarial cover on each site; consultants have office space and IT support.
• Provide five-day ward consultation services on both sites; see ward referrals at UHL with 24-hour turnaround; expect 10–15 ward patients per session.
• There is currently no on-call commitment.
• Contribute to departmental educational meetings and clinical supervision of doctors in training.
• Undertake or supervise clinical audit and comply with Clinical Governance requirements.
• Participate in continuing professional development locally and nationally; implement audit/research findings in practice; mentoring for newly appointed consultants.
• Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care; contribute to development of protocols/guidelines; assist in Annual Service Plan; comply with Trust policies.

Job description

Clinical Responsibilities

1. 1. The post-holder will be expected to undertake 3 cardiology clinics each week (4 hours each), and to see predominantly new patients with some follow-up capacity built in. We would encourage colleagues to develop specialty clinics, provided that they are of clinical relevance to the service and local needs.
2. 2. There is a commitment to adequate levels of secretarial cover on each site. Consultants are provided with sufficient office space and IT support.
3. 3. We provide five-day ward consultation services on both sites. Consultants participate in a rota to see ward referrals at UHL. We endeavour to see all referrals within 24 hours of referral. The workload varies but a reasonable expectation would be to see an average of 10-15 ward patients per session.
4. 4. There is currently no on‑call commitment.

Medical Education & Teaching Candidates are expected to contribute to departmental educational meetings and clinical supervision of doctors in training.

Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance

Undertake or supervise clinical audit and comply with Clinical Governance requirements

Continuing Professional Development

1. 1. Participate in continuing professional development at local and national level.
2. 2. Implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice:
   1. a. Prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy, in line with the Trusts commitment to supporting revalidation.
   2. b. A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.
3. 3. The Trust is committed to providing mentoring to newly appointed consultants.

Policy, Planning and Management

1. 1. Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care.
2. 2. Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines.
3. 3. Assist in the development of the Annual Service Plan for the Directorate and Division and participate in the strategic planning of the service.
4. 4. Comply with all Trust policies.
