Job summary

West Sussex County Council is recruiting for a term-time only driving role across multiple locations, including Clapham Depot near Worthing. You will be responsible for transporting children and young adults in 4–16 seat vehicles, adhering to schedules and Highway Code standards.

The role emphasises safety, effective communication with passengers, and a customer-focused service in a busy, supportive team environment.

Qualifications

  • Valid UK driving licence is required.
  • Driving licence category D1 or PCV is highly desirable.
  • Term-time only contract with part-time hours (up to 30 hours per week).
  • Role requires safe and courteous driving following Highway Code.

Job description

The Opportunity

Salary Range: £13.28 - £13.48 per hour.(Full-time Equivalent is£25,614 to £26,016 per annum)
Contract Type: Permanent - Term Time Only.
Working Pattern: Part-time hours up to 30 hours per week – exact pattern to be discussed at interview.
Location: Your base location is Clapham Depot (near Worthing) however, the work will be carried out across multiple locations. You won’t be required to visit the base location every working day.

What is term time only working? A term time only contract is for our staff who are employed to work only during periods when schools are open. Your pay is calculated on an annual basis and then you are paid over twelve equal monthly instalments.

In this role, you will provide an efficient driving service to children and young adult passengers. You will follow instructions in accordance with specified schedules to ensure West Sussex meets its commitments to customers.

You will undertake driving duties of an allocated vehicle of 4 - 16 seats to and from a variety of locations, using a high level of professionalism in a safe and appropriate way. You will communicate effectively with passengers, build trusting relationships and drive considerately in accordance with the Highway Code regulations.

  • Disability Awareness & Epilepsy Awareness
  • First Aid
  • Wheelchair tie down procedures
  • Challenging Behaviour as required

About you

Some of the key skills, experience and knowledge required to be successful in the role include:

  • Ability to drive safely and considerately in accordance with the Highway Code regulations.
  • Ability to communicate successfully with colleagues and passengers, build trusting relationships and exercising persuasive skills.
  • Ability to resolve straightforward problems.
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills gained through education or through relevant experience.
  • Valid UK driving licence.
  • Driving licence category D1 or PCV is highly desirable

About us

The Transport Provision Team is part of the Transport Co-ordination Department. The team plans and provides passenger transport solutions. These services are provided to eligible children and allows them to get to school which supports the bus network providing millions of bus journeys each year.

The Transport Provision Team provides specialist transport for people with special needs, using its own fleet of vehicles, many of which are fully accessible. The Transport Provision Team covers the whole of West Sussex and operates out of three bases in Chichester, Horsham and Worthing.
