Job summary

Gateshead Council in Gateshead is seeking a skilled project professional to lead SEN capital projects within the Education, Schools & Inclusion Service. You will work with schools, council services, contractors and external partners to deliver high-quality learning environments that are safe, inclusive and future-ready.

Deliver capital projects that create inspiring learning environments for children and young people with SEND

The Education, Schools & Inclusion Service plays a vital role in ensuring children and young people have access to learning environments that are safe, inclusive and fit for the future. Working closely with schools, council services, contractors and external partners, the team delivers capital investment programmes that improve educational facilities and support the increasing demand for specialist provision. This role will be central to the delivery of SEN capital projects, helping to create high-quality learning environments that make a positive difference to children and families across Gateshead.

Lead meaningful investment programmes that make a lasting impact on schools and communities

What You Will Get To Do

• Lead SEN capital projects through the full project lifecycle, from initial concept and planning through to completion and handover.


• Develop and maintain the Schools' Asset Management Plan in line with Department for Education requirements.


• Coordinate and manage capital projects arising from asset management and school organisation programmes.


• Collect, analyse and utilise asset management data to support investment decisions across schools and public buildings.


• Manage consultants, contractors and multidisciplinary project teams to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget and to specification.


• Monitor project performance, budgets, risks, communications and reporting arrangements, ensuring compliance with Council procedures and health and safety requirements.


• Engage with schools, communities, stakeholders and external partners to support successful project delivery and positive outcomes.

Use your project management expertise to transform educational spaces and improve outcomes for children.

What You Will Bring

• Knowledge of building-related project management, construction health and safety requirements, capital and revenue-funded programmes, and tendering and contract management processes.


• Experience in Building, Environment, Engineering or a related discipline, alongside education to a level that demonstrates good literacy and numeracy skills.


• Experience of successfully managing complex projects, multidisciplinary teams and project budgets to achieve agreed outcomes.


• The ability to build effective relationships with stakeholders, partners and local communities, including consultation and engagement activities.


• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and professionally.


• Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise workloads, work independently, manage deadlines and take ownership of projects.


• Experience of managing public sector funding programmes together with a commitment to delivering high-quality services and continuous improvement.
