Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit & develop an Apprentice Project Manager to be part of CHoICEs Capital Projects Team who are responsible for planning & managing significant Capital investment in the Estate, on behalf of South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.

Developing from apprentice to Project Manager, you will support the Team in broader delivery of the Trusts Capital Programme. Leading on assigned projects; managing all aspects of Design, Construction & Handover, required across any CHoICE managed premises. This includes managing multi-disciplinary teams including internal & external stakeholders, Design Consultants and Main Contractors, as required.

Committed to development of the successful candidate, the Training element of this post is to be delivered by CIOB. This will provide access to resources and experts from the industrys professional institute, leading to a Level 6 qualification, degree equivalent, and is accepted by CIOB as academic requirements for Membership (MCIOB).

To underpin training, there is a need to demonstrate you have had sufficient opportunity to put into practice your learning. We will work with the CIOB to develop a bespoke long-term plan to ensure we are able to support the candidate through this.

This is an exciting opportunity for those who are interested in a career in Project Management, within Healthcare, which is complex by nature, but rewarding in supporting Clinical Services to deliver acute health care.

Main duties of the job

Based at SRH, but required to work across all sites as required, working as part of the Capital Projects section, this post is developmental. Initially you will be working to the Band 4 job description and person specification during the 4 year apprenticeship programme which is made up of 20% study and 80% developing experience and responsibility in the role. Upon successful completion of 4-year Apprenticeship, you will then be working to a band 6 Project Manager job description and person specification

Initially, in order to meet the essential criteria for commencing Level 6 qualification for Design and Construction Management (Degree level)

a minimum of 2 A levels grades A to C (or equivalent), and

a minimum of 5 GCSE grades A* to C including a minimum grade B in Maths and English (or equivalent)

To provide succession planning, and to continue to demonstrate our commitment to development of our Team, we are looking to recruit an Apprentice Project Manager. Working within Capital Projects team within Estates Department, we have a commitment to delivering strategic elements of the Capital Programme, as well as supporting planned Backlog Maintenance (Capital) investment.

Project Managers are expected to manage schemes from Inception to Post Completion reviews, and ensure engagement of all internal and external stakeholders, providing adequate communication and management in accordance with Time, Cost and Quality constraints/criteria.

The Management Apprenticeship programme looks to provide dedicated training, underpinned by independent learning, as well as experience by working with existing Project Managers to gain experience via exposure, in the form of shadowing. The successful candidate will ultimately need to manage their own workload and independently manage projects, albeit with appropriate support. On that basis, the post will provide opportunities for the candidate to manage their own projects, with varying scale and complexity (as they develop) albeit under supervision.

Expectations at Completion of Apprenticeship, to inform training requirements:

Leading on assigned projects; managing all aspects of Design, Construction & Handover, required across any of CHoICE managed healthcare facilities. This includes managing multi-disciplinary teams including internal & external stakeholders, Design Consultants and Main Contractors as required.

The post holder will be required to:

  • Project manage a range of Capital Projects
  • Take the lead role in planning and design of schemes interfacing with Senior Managers of all Stakeholders.
  • Give specialist estates advice as required.

  • Work with others to ensure affordable capital programmes consistent with business priorities are delivered.
  • Manage a variety of Building/Engineering schemes which involve multi-disciplinary teams:
