Job summary

St Mary’s University in Twickenham is seeking a Safety Inspection Officer to help keep campus facilities safe and compliant. You will perform planned safety inspections, identify issues, and support fire safety checks across buildings.

Working 3 days a week (0.6 FTE) for a 1 year fixed-term contract, you will report to the Maintenance Manager and assist with drills and training while maintaining thorough records.

Qualifications

• Experience carrying out health and safety inspections or similar checks.
• May have knowledge of UK fire safety legislation and good practice.
• Has good record-keeping and reporting skills.
• Holds a fire door inspection qualification, or is willing to complete accredited training during induction.
• Ideally has experience in higher education, facilities management, or a similar environment.

Responsibilities

• Carry out regular safety inspections across teaching areas, halls of residence, sports facilities, and communal spaces.
• Identify hazards, defects, or maintenance issues and report them for action.
• Record inspection findings using a handheld device or digital system.
• Complete routine checks on fire extinguishers, evacuation chairs, refuge communication points, and other safety equipment.
• Work closely with Estates & Facilities colleagues, contractors, and the Health & Safety Officer.
• Report directly to the Maintenance Manager.
• Support fire drills, safety training sessions, and awareness campaigns across campus.
