Job description

The CAMHS Schools' Teams are part of an exciting trailblazer project funded by NHS England, Health Education England and partners with the aim of improving the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people in the community.

There is a specific focus on developing more access to helping and improving the general culture of emotional support within all primary and secondary schools and school provisions. Working alongside community partners, the Schools' Teams will be fully integrated with community CAMHS and educational settings.

You would be joining a comprehensive and dynamic CAMH service, delivering a substantial stepped model of care following the needs-led i-Thrive framework. Your role will help to develop and deliver a wide range of interventions, projects and system change, with the aim of whole school and whole community approaches supporting young people's mental health.

In addition to providing comprehensive consultation, assessment, risk management and interventions for young people experiencing emotional and mental health difficulties in schools, the post holder will supervise more junior colleagues.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a confident child and adolescent mental health professional, with experience of providing evidence-based interventions. You will be a child/young person (CYP) mental health practitioner (Family & Systemic Psychotherapist / Occupational Therapist / Registered Nurse / Social Worker / Arts Therapist / ?Senior CWP or EMHP).

The Luton Schools' Teams will be working to reduce health inequalities in communities where these are most prominent, working closely with the schools and other external partners to address their most prominent needs by implementing whole schools approaches and targeted interventions. Luton is a very diverse locality, with high levels of the young population having English as an additional language.

The CAMHS Schools Liaison Team (CSLT) focuses on early interventions, working closely with schools and our partners to improve access to mental health services for children and young people. The team will focus on the needs of the community to help reduce health inequalities, whilst delivering our whole school approach.

We offer an exciting and dynamic environment, where your ideas and career development will be valued. You will be supported directly by senior colleagues and we will develop the service together. You will be supported by regular, separate clinical and management supervision sessions, access to a variety of CPD sessions, and annual performance appraisals. You will also participate in weekly clinical discussions with the team.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • An EMHP/a CWP qualification, with experience, or a core profession (Family Therapist, Mental Health Nurse, Social Worker, Arts Therapist, ?Play Therapist, Occupational Therapist)
  • The appropriate level of qualification for your profession and be accredited or eligible to apply for accreditation within 6 months
  • Registration with your appropriate body (e.g. UKCP, NMC, HCPC, etc.), once available
  • Evidence of continuous and relevant, post-qualification professional training and development (CPD)
  • Post-graduate training or experience to support the needs of different children, young people and their families
Experience
  • Experience of working with CYP across the full age-range (6-18)
  • Experience of working with parents/caregivers
  • Experience of delivering low-intensity interventions for children's behaviours that challenge, children's/young people's anxiety and/or young people's low mood
  • Experience of delivering low-intensity interventions for mild to moderate low self-esteem and/or emerging body image concerns
  • Recognising when core interventions are appropriate for neurodiverse CYP and being able to make necessary adaptations
  • Experience of delivering low intensity interventions for OCD
Skills
  • Experience and skills of giving appropriate constructive feedback to professional colleagues at a range of levels in the system and of following necessary procedures when required
  • Managing your own time and caseload
  • Working effectively across organisational boundaries
  • Skilled in emergency and crisis assessments
  • Teaching skills, both in clinical settings and education centers
Knowledge
  • An understanding of an overarching, multi-component Whole School Approach and how elements of this interact with one another
  • Knowledge, experience and competence in following and applying safeguarding legislation and pathways (including contextual safeguarding)
  • A high degree of self-awareness and an ability to reflect on personal and professional attitudes and accept feedback
  • An awareness of current national guidelines and policies in the field of CAMHS, such as Long-Term Plan and Thrive
  • An understanding of the Mental Health and Mental Capacity Acts
  • A knowledge of developments in inter-agency partnership
