Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Nurse to work within the Cambridge CAMHS Neurodevelopmental Team.

We work with children and young people with moderate to severe mental health disorders with comorbid ASD, LD and ADHD, providing comprehensive assessment and intervention. This role would mainly work within the ADHD pathway, however there will also be opportunities for development in other pathways.

We are looking for an individual who is interested and passionate about working with young people in a CAMHS setting. We provide neurodevelopmental assessments and post-diagnostic support to young people and their families, including ADHD medication prescribing and monitoring, and psychoeducation.

You will receive clinical supervision relevant to your role. We have a monthly CPD programme and regular MDT reflective meetings. You will join a supportive team who are passionate about making a difference to young people and their families.

Main duties of the job

• To provide an evidence-based therapy service to children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders such as Autism, ADHD and Learning Disabilities in the Neurodevelopmental Service CAMHS which is part of the Children, Young People and Families Directorate in CPFT.
• Patients will be managed on a community basis, providing assessment of neurodevelopmental disorders and/or comorbid mental health disorder and evidence-based therapy.
• At the same time as offering advice and consultation on patient’s mental health care to colleagues and partner agencies and to other non-professional carers.
• To work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team’s and Trust’s policies and procedures.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• To work as an integral member of the CAMHS Neurodevelopment Community Team, providing comprehensive mental health and diagnostic assessments of ADHD and other specialist assessments (if applicable such as Qb, SALT, OT, Cognitive), demonstrating the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of data from a variety of sources including, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client’s care.
• To be part of the MDT ADHD formulation meetings and have the ability to utilise specialist knowledge to make decisions about a child or young person’s mental health and neurodevelopmental needs.
• To provide physical health checks including height, weight and blood pressure for children taking medication for ADHD.
• To provide ADHD medication reviews in clinic under the supervision of the ADHD doctors.
• To participate in the prevention and early detection of emotional and mental health difficulties in children and adolescents referred to the service.
• To participate in the planning and delivery of evidence-based therapeutic programmes e.g. Positive Behaviour Support, CBT and Parenting programmes on both an individual and group basis to children and young people and their families.
• To develop formulations of presenting problems or situations that integrate information from assessments within a coherent framework that draws upon mental health theory and evidence which incorporates developmental, interpersonal, societal, cultural and biological factors.
• To evaluate and make treatment decisions in collaboration with the Multidisciplinary Team.

Person specification
Education / Qualifications
  • A recorded/UK registered qualification with NMC such as Learning Disability Nurse, Children’s Nurse, Adult Nurse or RMN
  • Training in an evidence-based therapeutic intervention recommended by NICE Guidelines relevant to CAMHS, i.e. CBT, IPT, Systemic Therapy
  • Additional training in managing challenging behaviour
  • Training in ADHD diagnostics such as Qb (computerised) assessment or willingness to undertake training
Experience
  • Experience of working with children, young people and families
  • Experience of working with children or adults with ADHD, learning disability and/or autism.
  • Experience of undertaking mental health and risk assessments
  • Ability to manage own caseload and time
  • Post-qualification experience in assessment and treatment of children, young people and families and/or adults.
  • Experience of undertaking mental health risk assessments of children and young people
Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Evidence of ability to exercise a high level of judgement and decision-making.
