Job summary

The Sussex CAMHS Acute services offer a permanent Consultant Psychiatrist role to design, develop and lead an innovative crisis and home treatment model for young people aged 12‑18. The service prioritises play, safe, effective, caring care, allowing community treatment as an alternative to admission or supported discharge from an inpatient bed.

Location

Chalkhill Hospital, Lewes Road, Haywards Heath, RH16 4NQ – other SPFT sites in agreement with the service lead.

Key responsibilities
  • Provide clinical leadership and shape the acute care pathway in the new crisis & intensive home treatment service.
  • Work proactively as part of a multidisciplinary team (Psychiatrists, OT, Nursing, Psychology, Family Therapy, Social Work).
  • Contribute to the CAMHS psychiatry on‑call rota and liaise with the trust‑wide consultant network.
  • Lead service development, deliver training to junior staff and support continuous professional development.
  • Champion a safe, compassionate, play‑oriented, bio‑psycho‑social approach to community treatment.
Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCPsych or equivalent.
  • CCT in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or equivalent.
  • Fully registered with the GMC and included on the specialist register within six months.
  • Approved clinician status and S12 status achieved within three months of appointment.
  • Valid UK driving licence or proposed alternative evidence.
Skills & attributes
  • Excellent clinical skills using a bio‑psycho‑social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Able to manage clinical complexity, uncertainty and make decisions based on evidence and experience.
