Job description

CAD Technician – Maritime Engineering

Design the Future of Maritime Infrastructure

Are you ready to take your technical skills to the next level in a dynamic engineering environment? At Tetra Tech, we’re looking for an ambitious and adaptable CAD Technician to join our growing civil and maritime team in Belfast.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of maritime infrastructure projects—from ports and quays to coastal defences and marine terminals. We deliver innovative solutions to clients’ diverse needs with many flagship projects including Loch Ryan Port, Cork Container Terminal and Dinish Wharf Expansion. Whether you’re actively seeking your next challenge or open to exploring new possibilities, this role offers the chance to grow your career within a consultancy renowned for its technical excellence and collaborative culture.

Purpose & Scope of the Role

As a key member of our technical delivery team, you’ll support maritime engineers in producing high-quality drawings and technical details for infrastructure projects. You’ll contribute to 3D modelling, ensure BIM compliance, and play an active role in quality assurance. Reporting to the Technical Director, you’ll be part of a passionate team delivering innovative solutions across the UK’s coastal infrastructure. This position offers excellent training, mentoring and development opportunities, supported by our structured career pathways and professional development initiatives.

Your Impact in this Position

You’ll gain hands‑on experience supporting the design and delivery of civil and maritime projects, develop your CAD capabilities, and build trusted relationships with engineers and colleagues.

Your Toolkit for Success at Tetra Tech

We recruit using core capabilities—the toolkit of essential skills, experience, competencies, and responsibilities required to perform the role effectively. But we’ll let you in on a secret: there’s no such thing as the ‘perfect’ candidate. If you feel you meet 75% of the requirements for this role, we would love to hear from you.

Technical Competence

This role requires a technician with strong AutoCAD skills and a willingness to learn new software and techniques. Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, or reinforcement detailing is advantageous but not essential. You’ll be expected to produce high-quality technical drawings and support engineers in preparing detailed design documentation. A proactive attitude and adaptability are key.

Problem Solving & Quality Assurance

Attention to detail is a critical skill for a CAD Technician. You’ll be responsible for producing precise technical drawings that form the foundation of complex infrastructure projects, where accuracy directly impacts design integrity and construction outcomes. Beyond drafting, your role involves analysing technical challenges and collaborating with engineers to resolve design issues efficiently. You’ll contribute to quality assurance processes by reviewing drawings for compliance with standards, verifying dimensions and specifications, and ensuring consistency across documentation. A methodical approach, combined with a problem‑solving mindset, will be key to your success in this role.

Team Collaboration & Communication

You’ll work closely with senior engineers, project managers, and other technical specialists to support the delivery of complex infrastructure projects. Your ability to communicate clearly—both verbally and through your drawings—will ensure that design intent is accurately conveyed and understood across disciplines. In a multidisciplinary environment, strong interpersonal skills will help you build effective working relationships, contribute to team discussions, and respond constructively to feedback. You’ll be expected to contribute to technical meetings, coordinate with colleagues across different departments, and ensure that your work integrates seamlessly with broader project objectives. This collaborative approach not only enhances project outcomes but also fosters a supportive and inclusive team culture.

MANDATORY Training & Qualification Requirements
  • Level 4 qualification (HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or equivalent)
BENEFICIAL Training, Qualifications, Or Equivalent Work Experience
  • Progress toward EngTech registration
  • Experience in maritime or civil infrastructure projects
  • Familiarity with BIM processes and 3D modelling tools
Work Patterns and Locations

The position is based in a large, permanently desked office located on the edge of the city with on‑site parking, strong public transport connections and easy access to major road networks. The role supports hybrid working, with an expectation of two to three days per week in the office to facilitate mentoring, collaboration and team coordination. Flexible working arrangements can be accommodated where project responsibilities allow. The multidisciplinary environment provides exposure to a wide range of significant projects, including marine, coastal, regeneration and renewable related developments.

In alignment with the Equality Act 2010, we will make reasonable adjustments to support candidates and employees requiring additional arrangements. This could include adaptations to work schedules, training approaches, or the physical workspace. Please inform us if you need any accommodations during the recruitment process or in your day‑to‑day role.
