Cable Specialist Consultant

Ellesmere Port - hybrid working

About the role

As the Cables Specialist Consultant you will focus on the delivery and technical project management of a range of forensic investigations related to the condition assessments and failure analysis of power systems plant, in particular LV, MV and HV cable systems.

You'll have a hands-on practical approach to projects being able to strip down power systems plant you are involved in delivering and work alongside the technical engineering team. You'll also provide other project delivery including planning, evidence collation, reporting, project clean-up and closure.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical advice and knowledge with other team members
  • Drive continuous improvements across Power Forensics proposition
  • Investigations to include:
    • Condition assessment of paper and polymeric cable systems
    • Failure investigations: condition assessments of cable joints, terminations and sealing ends
  • Day-to-day running of the projects hall and materials lab including:
  • Working with others across the wider analytical team to ensure quality delivery for the customer
Essential experience
  • Eng. (or higher degree) in Electrical Engineering
  • Working towards or have achieved professional registration status in relevant institution
  • Significant working industrial experience
  • Be able to scope out a technical investigation to condition assess or establish root cause of failure or degree of ageing
  • Lead & develop relationships with clients
  • Ability to work to deadlines on multiple projects
  • Proficient in writing of technical reports and appraising findings from technical investigations
  • Experience working for a cable OEM, an electrical utility organisation or a power plant service provider would be ideal
  • To have comprehensive technical understanding of:
    • Power systems plant and its operation
    • The value of the investigation to the customer
    • The design and construction of specific power systems plant such as cables etc.
    • An understanding of the electrical field distributions in power plant and methods used to control electrical field distributions
    • An understanding of common failure mode of power system plant
    • An understanding of partial discharge and its significance in the ageing and failure of cable systems
    • An understanding of how to separate the observations following failure from the root cause
    • Being able to identify risks in the handling and processing of chemicals and materials
    • Knowledge of high voltage testing is desirable
