Job summary

SSEN Transmission is hiring for EHV Cable Engineering roles at Professional and Senior levels within our HVDC Project Engineering team as part of Pathway to 2030. Based in Scotland, roles involve delivering state-of-the-art HVDC cable projects across maritime and terrestrial environments, with emphasis on safety, quality, and technical leadership.

Candidates should have a minimum BEng/BSc in engineering, experience in HVDC/HVAC projects, and familiarity with EPC contracts and CDM regulations.

Qualifications

• Requires a minimum BEng/BSc in a relevant engineering discipline.
• Technical knowledge in HVDC/HVAC transmission cable projects.
• Experience with EPC contracts and CDM regulations, incl. Supervisor/Principal Designer roles.
• Awareness of industry standards and ability to communicate effectively.
• Strong time-management and organisational skills; mentoring experience valued.

Responsibilities

• Support FEED activities: options assessment, route dev, landfall selection, risk assessment with cross-disciplinary teams.
• Promote safety-in-design and fulfill CDM duties as Designer/Principal Designer.
• Review contractor designs for compliance with requirements and safety standards.
• Supervise installation and commissioning to ensure compliance with Employer's requirements.
• Mentor junior engineers and foster technical excellence within the team.

Base Location: For this role, we require successful applicants to be based from one of our Scottish locations - Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen or Inverness.

The role

As part of SSEN Transmission Pathway to 2030 programme of works, we have EHV Cable Engineering opportunities at Professional, and Senior level, to join our HVDC Project Engineering team to help drive forward our projects and successfully deliver a network for Net Zero. Our projects include state-of-the-art AC and DC cable system technology, and traverse marine and terrestrial environments across the UK. Our Cable Project Engineering roles are key in driving technical excellence, quality of installation, best practice, and resolution to design risks/technical issues. These roles reside within SSEN Transmission’s Offshore Project Engineering Team and primarily focus on HVDC cable projects. Experience with Transmission networks is advantageous, although not essential. We encourage candidates with a project engineering background, ideally with HV/EHV cable engineering background in contractor, consultancy or client organisations to apply.

You will

• Support project Front End Engineering Design (FEED) activities such as options assessment, cable route development, landfall selection and risk assessment. This includes interdisciplinary working alongside various teams including environmental and land consenting, geotechnical, civil and offshore installation engineers.
• Promote the safety-in-design ethos and discharge these CDM duties on behalf of SSE Transmission As a key member of Designer and Principal Designer teams. This includes risk reduction (technical, quality, health, and safety) to the point of elimination or as low as is reasonably practicable.
• Review and acceptance of Contractor engineering and design deliverables for compliance with Employer's requirements, legislation and safe practice.
• Supervise installation and commissioning works for compliance with Employer's requirements and legislation.
• Support and mentoring of junior engineers, ensuring they are adequately supported throughout traineeship.

Our Senior Roles Include The Following Additional Responsibilities

• Inform the HVDC cable system requirements for Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Contracts and supporting the tender review process as part of the technical team.
• Coordinate and support the installation and commissioning works for compliance with the Employer’s requirements, legislation – promoting health & safety.
• Technical leadership, mentorship, and driving excellence within the HVDC Project Engineering team.
• Lead special analytical studies, solves complex and ambiguous problems.

You have

• A qualification of minimum BEng/BSc qualification level in a relevant engineering discipline.
• Technical knowledge and experience in holding key technical position(s) during development and delivery of a HVDC or HVAC transmission cable projects.
• Work experience and understanding of EPC contracts and CDM regulations; particularly with respect to roles of Supervisor and Principal Designer.
• Competent awareness and working knowledge of relevant industry standards, specifications and recommendations.
• Excellent communication, time-management, and organisational skills.
• Experience and enthusiasm for giving mentorship/guidance to junior engineers and building technical excellence within the team and wider business.
