Job description

Reporting directly to a Purchase / Category Manager or Senior Buyer, you will be primarily responsible for the commercial management of a portfolio of parts and/or services required within a manufacturing location.

You should have an in-depth understanding of the supply market to ensure competitive purchasing of new parts and/or services, highlighting and delivering all opportunities for cost reduction.

You will also be accountable for ensuring that the supply base within the category can meet the quality and delivery expectations of the business.

The role may include responsibilities as a Lead Buyer, which involves creating category and/or supplier strategies, managing negotiations for the Group, supporting escalations, and ensuring alignment and consistency across all Buying Teams.

Building constructive relationships with the supply base and internal stakeholders is essential.

Strategy Development & Execution

Deliver sourcing strategies for each category and work with key stakeholders to execute projects.

Supplier Performance & Delivery

Work closely with NPI, Engineering, and Operational teams to maintain supplier performance standards.

Teamwork & Self-Development

Collaborate with BU operational and pricing teams and pursue personal development.

Supply Base Management & Coordination

Maintain detailed market knowledge and ensure consistent communication with suppliers, aligned with overall strategies.

Buyer Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Development & Execution:

  • Identify and quantify opportunities to reduce costs.
  • Stay informed of technological and market changes for cost improvements.
  • Assess business requirements and develop sourcing strategies.
  • Implement strategies through plans supporting early supplier engagement, cost-saving projects, tendering, contracting, capacity management, and performance targets.
  • Monitor and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Manage supplier performance measures and implement contracts and SLAs.

Supplier Performance & Delivery:

  • Develop relationships with key suppliers to meet performance targets.
  • Communicate with the supply base regarding planning and volume fluctuations.
  • Support launch activities to meet timing, quality, and cost expectations.
  • Act on risk assessments and ensure business continuity plans are in place.

Teamwork & Self-Development:

  • Ensure effective communication across the supply chain.
  • Address performance issues and understand business requirements.
  • Support category managers and pursue personal development.
  • Adhere to purchasing policies and procedures.

Supply Base Management & Coordination:

  • As Lead Buy, lead supplier performance reviews, negotiations, and strategic planning.
  • Manage supplier relationships, capacity, warranties, obsolescence, and communication strategies.

Buyer Requirements:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Effective team working and influential skills.
  • Conflict resolution, negotiation, and results ownership.
  • Experience in Category & Supplier Management, Cost & Pricing, Contracting, and Performance Management.
  • Financial awareness and engineering or programme management understanding.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary and virtual teams.
  • Graduate calibre, preferably CIPS qualified, with a production or engineering background.
  • Flexibility to travel.
