The global shift towards sustainable and eco-friendly transportation is pushing the innovation of electric-powered systems in public transportation. Light Rail Transit Systems are increasingly adopting electrification to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.

The Revolution Very Light Rail (RVLR) Vehicle has been developed to provide a modern, attractive and cost-effective solution for rail services on lightly used branch lines in the UK and internationally on ‘last mile’ connector shuttle services. In addition, ‘Pop-Up’ Metro opportunities allow trialing for demand as well as for special event shuttles (i.e. Olympics). The RVLR market adoption model provides an ideal opportunity to launch a sustainable electric propulsion system (battery) provided as a service that can be coupled to RVLR leasing contracts.

The BaaSTech business is principally a provision of energy as a service: It is based on a battery and charging technology selected to service the light rail operations. The selection of battery technology and line side charging methodologies is the core of the technology provision for the business.

The Opportunity

The Business Unit Manager is accountable for the overall performance, profitability and operational delivery of BaaS Technologies. You will establish commercial framework for the business, lead contract negotiation, drive revenue and margin growth and ensure efficient day to day operations, This role is ideal for a commercially savvy leader with broad business experience across operations and delivery and ideally with experience in battery technology; energy transition or related technical fields. Experience in the rail sector would be complementary, but is not essential.

What you will do at BaaS Technologies

  • Own the full delivery and performance of the business unit, ensuring revenue, margin and customer outcomes are achieved
  • Design and implement commercial frameworks to support the BaaS Business plans. This will cover procurement of the battery and Line Side Charger Assets, securing asset finance arrangements as well as managing the asset leasing frameworks with clients to generate revenue streams and support business growth
  • Establish asset management frameworks that utilise battery management systems to optimise deployment and utilisation techniques to ensure battery health maximum battery life
  • Monitor and manage financial performance, including forecasting, budgeting and gross margin optimisation
  • Lead initiatives to improve profitability by streamlining costs, implementing processes and enhancing resource allocation
  • Maintain a strong understanding of market trends, competitor activity and emerging technologies – particularly in the energy and battery space
  • Develop and apply pricing strategies that reflect both commercial ambition and market conditions
  • Oversee daily operations, ensuring consistent delivery of battery assets, energy services and projects in line with business objectives
  • Establish and monitor KPIs across financial, operational and customer facing metrics
  • Foster a high performance culture that balances commercial outcomes with strong internal collaboration
  • Build and manage key customer and partner relationships to support retention, satisfaction and future growth
  • Represent the business unit in cross functional and executive level discussions, providing insight and leadership on unit performance and plans

What we’re looking for

  • 8+ years of experience in a commercial, operational, or general management role with accountability for business outcomes
  • Strong track record of driving revenue growth, managing P&L and improving profitability
  • Broad commercial and operational experience, ideally in a technical or engineering led business
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage complex delivery portfolios and work cross functionally
  • Strong financial and commercial acumen with results orientated approach
  • Excellent communication, leadership and relationship building skills
  • Confident decision maker with strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Desirable: Knowledge or experience in sustainable technologies / green sector with particular knowledge of battery technology, energy storage systems or electrification projects
