The Scientific Support unit for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire (BCH), one of the leading Scientific Services Units in the country, has an exciting opportunity for a successful candidate to join the unit as a Scenes of Crime Administrator based at Luton Police Station, Bedfordshire, in a full-time position.

The successful candidate will work alongside a team of Volume Crime Scene Examiners and Scenes of Crime Officers, providing administrative support to the unit. They will be line managed by a Scenes of Crime Supervisor, based in Luton. The hours of work will be Monday – Thursday 08.00 – 16.00hrs and Friday 08:00 – 15:30hrs. Flexible working can be considered if successful.

The position is based at Luton Police Station, Luton, Bedfordshire LS1 1SD and is a fixed site role. Whilst you will be part of a tri-force team you will be required to work from this location, agile working is not suitable due to nature of the role. However, on occasions there may be the requirement to assist other SOCO Offices within BCH and therefore may be the need to travel within the tri-force area on occasion.

The primary role of the Scientific Support Unit is to attend crime scenes of a various nature including volume and major crime, conduct examinations and gather evidence to be used in court to prove the evidential points of the case. The successful candidate will therefore be exposed to exhibit handling and some exhibits could be of a distressing nature. The unit is ISO 17020 accredited, and this plays a major role in the day-to-day workings of the unit. The Scenes of Crime Administrator role provides a high level of support to the Crime Scene Examiners, gatekeeping the receipt of exhibits into the SOCO office, ensuring quality control is in compliance with the exhibit handling SOP and ISO 17020 and thereby maintaining quality of items entering the Criminal Justice System.

We are seeking a highly motivated, resilient individual with a focus on providing a high-quality public service. Previous qualifications or experience within a forensic field is not required. Training will be provided to allow the successful candidate to prove competence in the accredited skills required to carry out the role.

The Scientific Services Unit utilises a vacancy-based career progression scheme to fill scenes of crime positions at a higher level and therefore individuals looking to pursue a career in Scenes of Crime are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate an understanding and ability to follow procedures that are designed in line with the Forensic Regulator and ISO 17020. They will also need to be adaptable and flexible to process change within this high demand unit. Having a good eye for detail is advantageous to applicants for this role. The role requires the ability to be a good team player, flexible and take ownership of the responsibilities involved. IT skills are very important to the role and knowledge of excel, word, teams, outlook for email and case management systems are essential. You will also need to have good communication skills.

Daily duties can include but are not limited to

  • Quality assessment checking of exhibits for accuracy and recording any errors found
  • Processing exhibits for onward travel to other units within the department and to external providers
  • Receiving and moving exhibits to storage areas on return to the unit
  • Assisting with monthly store ordering
  • Deal with enquiries from Police Officers both by phone and face to face
  • Cleaning of Admin areas and recording of when task completed

The post holder will provide excellent customer service to the Police network in which we work and outside partner agencies while managing a wide range of tasks, looking for ways to improve the service we deliver.
