KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES / ROLE PURPOSE
This role sits at the intersection of data engineering and business intelligence, serving as the critical bridge between the data engineering team and the data analysts. This role is responsible for aiding the data engineers by transforming raw data into clean, structured, and well-modelled datasets that power reliable reporting and analytics across the business. Working closely with the data engineers and analysts, the BI developer will build and maintain transformation pipelines, develop robust semantic data models, and deliver high-quality Power BI reports and dashboards that enable the business to make confident, data-driven decisions.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
- Act as the primary connection point between the Data Engineering and Data Analyst teams, ensuring data delivered through pipelines is correctly structured, documented, and ready for analysis and reporting.
- Design, build, and maintain transformation pipelines within Microsoft Fabric, converting raw ingested data into clean, consistent, analytics-ready datasets.
- Develop and maintain reusable, well-documented semantic data models optimized for Power BI consumption and business reporting.
- Build, publish, and maintain dynamic, interactive Power BI reports and dashboards that meet business requirements, using advanced DAX measures, Power Query transformations, and row-level security where required.
- Support the Data Engineering team in documenting source-to-target mappings and re-engineering manual or fragmented data flows into scalable, automated, and repeatable processes within Microsoft Fabric Pipelines and OneLake.
- Collaborate closely with Data Analysts to understand reporting requirements and translate business questions into well-structured data models and reliable reporting solutions.
- Establish and maintain data quality checks, validation rules, and monitoring within the transformation layer to ensure data is accurate, consistent, and trustworthy.
- Implement and uphold data governance best practices within the BI and transformation layer.
- Optimize the performance of Power BI datasets and transformation pipelines, including incremental refresh, aggregation tables, query folding, and efficient DAX patterns to ensure fast and reliable report delivery.
- Conduct data audits and assessments to evaluate data quality, governance, and security practices, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions.
- Develop and maintain documentation for data pipelines, data sources, transformations, and data lineage to ensure transparency, traceability, and compliance with data governance standards.
- Work closely with stakeholders to manage relationships and oversee the full project lifecycle, providing technical leadership and project management for multiple reporting solutions.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Programming Proficiency: Hands-on experience building within Microsoft Fabric — including Pipelines, Dataflows Gen2, Lakehouse, and Onelake — combined with strong Power BI skills across report design, DAX, Power Query, dataset management, and workspace governance.
- Data Modelling and Architecture: Solid understanding of data transformation principles and hands-on experience building semantic data models, including star schema design (fact and dimension tables), for analytics and BI consumption.
- SQL Proficiency: Strong SQL skills for querying, transforming, and modelling data across cloud data platforms. Ability to write efficient, well-structured queries and understand query performance optimisation.
- ETL/ELT Processes: Expert in ELT/ELT processes, including creating scripts and workflows to extract and transform data for analysis.
- Data Warehousing: Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and technologies to store and manage large volumes of structured and unstructured data.
- Data Governance: Understanding of data governance principles and frameworks, including data quality, security, compliance, and privacy requirements.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Proven track record of tackling complex data-related problems, identifying patterns, trends, and outliers in data sets, and proposing data-driven solutions to business challenges.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach to data analysis, ensuring data accuracy, consistency, and integrity throughout the analysis process, including data cleaning and validation.
- Collaborative Team Player: Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, translate business requirements into data solutions and present findings to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
- Continuous Learning: A willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies is highly valued in this role.
