Company: LeafyColl
Location: Cambridge, UK
Salary: £53,548 per annum + pension
Hours: Full time
Contract: Permanent
Start date: As soon as the right candidate is available

About LeafyColl

LeafyColl is a Cambridge-based biotechnology company producing human-identical proteins in plants. Our first product is bioidentical human collagen, supplied as a B2B ingredient for cosmeceuticals, with medical devices and functional food to follow. We work with contract manufacturers and leading academic and industry partners.

We’re a small, collaborative and fast-moving team where everyone has real ownership of their work and a direct impact on the business.

The role

We are looking for a Business Analyst to provide the research, data and financial analysis behind LeafyColl’s commercial and growth decisions. You will design and run market and stakeholder research, analyse data rigorously, build cost and financial models, and turn your findings into clear recommendations for our leadership team, partners, investors and funders. You will also coordinate suppliers and project reporting across our commercial and collaborative R&D activities.

Our primary requirement is strong business research and quantitative analysis skills, with proven experience of designing studies, collecting primary data and turning results into recommendations.

What you will do
  • Design and carry out market and customer research, including surveys, questionnaires and stakeholder interviews with brands, manufacturers, clinicians and partners.
  • Analyse quantitative and qualitative data using statistical methods, and present findings in clear reports and presentations.
  • Analyse our target markets (cosmeceuticals, medical devices and functional food), including market size, segments, competitors, pricing and barriers to adoption.
  • Build and maintain financial and cost models, including unit economics, pricing, cost of goods and sensitivity analysis, working with our scientific team on production data.
  • Support techno-economic and sustainability analysis, including collecting process data for cost and life-cycle assessments that compare our proteins with animal-derived and fermentation-derived alternatives.
  • Assess business models, including ingredient supply and licensing, and turn customer insight and our partner pipeline into demand forecasts and go-to-market recommendations.
  • Coordinate suppliers, contract manufacturers and logistics, tracking costs, timelines and performance.
  • Support LeafyColl’s collaborative R&D projects, including research and analysis for grant applications, project reports, and budget and milestone tracking.
  • Carry out literature and policy reviews on markets, regulation and sustainability to inform strategy.
  • Prepare evidence, models and presentations for strategic planning, board reporting, fundraising and partner discussions.
Essential skills, experience and qualifications
  • A master’s degree in international business, business, finance, economics, management or a related discipline.
  • Experience of designing surveys or questionnaires and collecting primary quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Strong statistical analysis skills using SPSS or similar software, and good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Sound understanding of finance, accounting or financial analysis.
  • Experience writing research reports and presenting findings to professional or academic audiences.
  • Experience of working with stakeholders and suppliers, and of managing your own workload and projects independently.
Desirable skills and experience

It would also be great if you have:

  • Advanced statistical methods, such as regression or structural equation modelling (for example with SmartPLS).
  • Experience of running or managing operations in a small business, including scheduling, budgets and vendor relationships.
  • Systematic literature review and reference management (for example EndNote or Mendeley).
  • Interest in, or experience of, biotechnology, life sciences or sustainability, including life-cycle assessment.
  • Experience contributing to grant-funded or academic research projects.

You do not need every desirable skill to apply. Training in sector-specific tools will be provided.

What we offer
  • £53,548 per annum, plus company pension.
  • A permanent, full-time position.
  • Broad exposure across science, operations, commercial strategy and fundraising in a fast-paced, collaborative start-up.
  • Professional development, training and work with leading academic and industry partners.

LeafyColl is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all backgrounds. Personal data submitted with applications will be used only for recruitment and handled in line with UK GDPR.
