Salary: £47,620 - £53,310 per annum inclusive of all allowances

Location : Guildhall, London

Hybrid – you'll be expected to be in the office at least 3 days per week or 60% of your working time in the office.

The City Surveyor's Operations Division is responsible for the delivery of a wide range of construction, maintenance and professional property services for the City of London Corporation's commercial and operational property portfolio in the City, West End and other areas of London as well as open spaces such as Epping Forest, Hampstead Heath and Burnham Beeches.

The City of London Corporation is seeking x2 skilled and driven Building Surveyors to deliver a wide range of impactful projects across its diverse portfolio of operational and investment properties — from heritage-listed buildings to modern public infrastructure. The City Surveyor's Operations Division is responsible for the delivery of a wide range of construction, maintenance, and professional property services for the City of London Corporation's commercial and operational property portfolio in the City, West End and other areas of London as well as open spaces such as Epping Forest, Hampstead Heath and Burnham Beeches.

This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the preservation, improvement, and innovation of some of the most significant buildings in the UK. You'll support the delivery of capital and revenue works, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Purpose of the Role

Working under the direction of the Senior Principal Surveyor, you will:

  • Deliver minor and mid-scale construction and refurbishment projects within the City of London.
  • Undertake professional surveying duties across various properties in line with corporate and departmental strategies.
  • Lead projects forming part of revenue and capital works programmes, applying modern and efficient methods of working.
  • Ensure health & safety, quality, and statutory compliance at all stages of the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop project briefs, feasibility studies, budgets, and programmes in collaboration with internal departments and external partners.
  • Conduct building condition surveys, structural inspections, and schedules of dilapidations.
  • Prepare specifications, drawings, and tender documentation; manage procurement and contract administration processes.
  • Liaise with planning authorities to secure relevant consents (e.g., Building Regulations, Listed Building Consent).
  • Supervise contractors and consultants on-site, ensuring work is delivered to specification and within agreed timeframes.
  • Maintain robust financial oversight — from tender evaluations to final accounts and performance reports.
  • Identify and mitigate project risks, including health & safety considerations, environmental impact, and stakeholder concerns.
  • Contribute to continuous service improvement and support the strategic goals of the department.

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience as a Building Surveyor, ideally in a public sector or heritage context.
  • Working knowledge of building construction, statutory requirements, and project delivery frameworks.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and project management skills.
  • A proactive and collaborative mindset, with the ability to solve complex problems creatively.
  • Chartered or working towards MRICS or equivalent qualification (desirable).
