Job description

The role of the Building Surveyor is critical to maintaining and upgrading the Council's housing stock. You will work across a wide range of high-value capital projects, including major capital programmes for housing. Your work will include retrofit works, planned maintenance, cyclical maintenance, large responsive maintenance, and asbestos management, ensuring all projects are appropriately surveyed, specified, scheduled, procured, and contract-managed.

The post holder will lead on capital projects (including retrofit works), managing all aspects from start to final accounts. This includes preparing tender documentation, bills of quantities, design specifications, contract valuations, and on-site measurements. You will also carry out the Principal Designer role under CDM regulations. Additionally, responsibilities include preparing claims, contracts, schedules of rates, and small estimates for various clients.

You must have a good understanding of retrofit grant requirements to deliver compliant and successful schemes, including PAS standards, Trustmark requirements, and roles as Retrofit Designer/Assessor and Coordinator.

You should be confident with IT, capable of navigating MS Office and Outlook, and possess knowledge of databases and AutoCAD.

While working independently, support from the broader team is always available. We seek dynamic, innovative, and forward-thinking individuals. Experience working in a person-centred environment or with older and vulnerable client groups is desirable, but full induction and ongoing training will be provided.

Benefits include:

  • 32 days annual leave plus bank holidays, with the option to purchase additional leave (pro-rata for part-time).
  • Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme with optional Additional Voluntary Contributions.
  • Flexi-time and flexible working arrangements.
  • Generous maternity, paternity, and adoption leave schemes.
  • Various staff forums and schemes such as Green Car Leasing, Cycle to Work, and discounts at the Dolphin Centre and other retailers.
  • Access to training, learning, and development opportunities, physiotherapy, confidential counselling, and wellbeing services.
