Job Description
The Role:
Working in one of the most iconic and historic Grade I listed buildings in the country, dedicated to promoting the Arts and Sciences by hosting 390 events annually in the main auditorium and 800 in smaller spaces.
To be part of the Building Services team, providing M&E skills to maintain the building's fabric, facilities, and services. As Duty BST on roster, ensure all M&E services function properly and support the staging of over 100 events. Perform daily monitoring, maintenance, and small mechanical works with high craftsmanship standards, supporting event staging with flexibility and adaptability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain mechanical and electrical plant services ensuring safety, compliance, and operational readiness.
- Keep domestic services (water, electric, gas) in good order, undertaking repairs and improvements for uninterrupted service.
- Maintain electrical installations, services, and plant per current regulations.
- Ensure life safety systems (PA, fire alarm, secondary lighting) are operational, and perform first-line repairs.
- Be familiar with the 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations and site guidelines.
- Diagnose faults, repair electrical equipment, and work with modern electrical systems.
- Conduct occasional Portable Appliance Testing.
- Maintain HVAC systems, including air handling units, chillers, and fan coil units.
- Install and repair piping in accordance with regulations.
- Perform daily plant room checks, monitor BMS (Trend 963), report malfunctions.
- Address plumbing issues like unblocking toilets and remedial work.
- Assist with stage lift maintenance and liaise with external contractors.
- Respond to emergency site requests to support building services.
- Keep workshop and storage areas tidy, maintain stock levels, and order supplies as needed.
- Carry out Preventive Planned Maintenance (PPM) on mechanical, domestic, and heating systems.
- Follow sustainability policies and promote a safe working environment in line with health and safety guidelines.
- Perform other duties as reasonably assigned by management.
Person Specification:
- Complete apprenticeship with City and Guilds or relevant courses (e.g., 236 part 1 and 2, 17th edition, 2391 inspection/testing) or at least Level 2 NVQ, with broad knowledge of electrical and mechanical building systems.
- Experience in installation, testing, and inspection of M&E systems, including pumps, motors, HVAC, gas burners, hot water systems, and steam boilers if possible.
- Experience working in a large public entertainment venue, responding to helpdesk and BMS alarms.
- Hold a CSCS certificate.
- Ability to fault-find, test, and rectify electrical systems safely and efficiently under tight deadlines.
- Proficient in Word, Excel, Outlook; capable of completing duty logs for show shifts.
- Understanding of energy management and environmental controls, with creative problem-solving skills.
- Flexible, team-oriented, with strong communication skills and ability to remain calm under stress.
- Hands-on approach with diligence and thorough understanding of health and safety regulations, including permits to work.
