Building Services Technical Lead

Salary: £62,496.60 (Inclusive of 12.5% shift allowance and contractual overtime)

Flexible Working: 4 days on, 4 days off (12-hour day shifts). Due to the nature of the role, flexible or remote working isn’t possible. We’ll work with you to ensure you have a good work-life balance, taking into account any responsibilities outside of work as far as possible.

About Us: MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners, including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. A role in MI5 means you’ll do unique and challenging work in a supportive environment, making a real difference to UK national security.

The Role: As the Building Services Technical Lead, you’ll help protect our people, places, and property. Our Estate team manages a portfolio of properties, delivering high-quality building services, facilities management, support services, and projects across various building types. You’ll work closely with our engineering suppliers, partners, and building occupants, overseeing the monitoring and control of the operation of plant and systems within our buildings, ensuring minimal disruption and downtime.

Actively driving quality and improvement while implementing and managing change, you’ll seek the best resolution to deliver an excellent customer experience. You’ll identify areas of improvement and take ownership of problems, making regulatory and health and safety compliance your top priority.

About You: To apply, you need a minimum HNC qualification or equivalent (City & Guilds or NVQ Level 4) in a related field such as mechanical or electrical engineering. You’ll demonstrate your technical skills in either the mechanical or electrical field within a large commercial/office building. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of plant criticality maintenance regimes and life cycle planning as well as a sound knowledge of Safe Systems of Work and mechanical/technical permits.

As someone with recent experience working in management operations, you’ll be confident undertaking work audits and providing reports that result in improved operational delivery. You’ll be passionate about delivering excellent operational customer service and able to build and maintain positive professional relationships with our stakeholders, partners, and suppliers.

Training and Development: When you start, you’ll get a three-day induction to help you understand our ways of working and be assigned a buddy to help you settle in. We’ll work with you to build the skills you need to successfully carry out your responsibilities, providing access to learning and development opportunities tailored to your role. We’ll also invest in your learning and support you to gain professional qualifications and certifications.

Rewards and Benefits: You’ll receive a starting salary of £62,496.60 (Inclusive of 12.5% shift allowance and contractual overtime). Other benefits include:

  • 25 Days Annual Leave automatically rising to 30 days after 5 years' service, and an additional 10.5 days public and privilege holidays
  • Opportunities to be recognised through our employee performance scheme
  • Interest-free season ticket loan (travel and parking)
  • Personal Learning budget
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Facilities such as a gym, restaurant and on-site coffee bars (at some locations)
  • Paid parental and adoption leave

At MI5, diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. We need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce.

What to Expect: Our recruitment process is fair, transparent, and based on merit. Here is a brief overview of each stage:

  • Application sift, looking at your motivation for the role and the organisation
  • Assessment centre consisting of a competency-based interview and Technical Assessment
